Don't forget that Duane replaced a Les Paul goldtop with his legendary Gretsch 6120 (No. 25827) which he bought from Ziggie's in Phoenix, Arizona on October 21st 1957. The price was $420 - $65 deposit and the remaining payments spread over 24 months. By the time of the last payment, Duane was a top-selling artist all over the world, with nine hit singles and two albums already to his credit. He couldn't have done it with a Les Paul!

Part 2 of this Les Paul tribute is on at the same time on Tuesday 17th August.

I was very surprised to hear that Les introduced Charlie Christian to the guitar world - Wow - Charlie is another guitarist I consider brilliant and original.

Part 2 is apparently covering the subject of the Les Paul guitar itself - should be a very interesting program/show.

Cheers,

Alan.

A documentry was made called "Chasing Sound" and transmitted a few months back by the BBC,I think it was on BBC4. The DVD should still be available from Amazon. Running time is 90 minutes with 90 minutes of extras.Details might be availbale on www.kochvision.com. I have also a DVD of "Les Paul and Mary Ford at Home" ,10 episodes of the origional Listerine TV coimmercials. He's parting was a great lost an I'll always remember the two occasions I saw him at the Iridium club NY.

I purchased "Chasing Sound" from Amazon and it arrived today so I watched it this afternoon. Well, why wait?! A fascinating insight and reminder of how the things we take for granted in music today had to be created by pioneers like Les. It was worth the price for the extras alone and I have a pre-order placed for the DVD of "Les Paul and Mary Ford at Home". Some of those "at home" clips seem old fashioned and stilted now but the sound and the musicianship will never date. Nice to see Tommy Emmanuel duetting with Les, their two different styles and sounds complementing each other. And didn't Mary make a perfect vocal partner to Les's virtuosity?
