Jet Harris 'Book' Scams - Caveat Emptor

Postby Arpeggio » 26 Oct 2010, 18:57

I don't know if anyone else has come across this latest rip - off perpetrated by unscrupulous fraudsters. I'm sure that many here in the UK on ShadowMusic wouldn't be taken in. But...I had some recent correspondence with a non UK resident on another subject. During the course of our conversation he mentioned some books about Jet Harris that he was considering buying - but that they were rather expensive.

"I've tried to obtain Jet Harris' Survivor written by Dave Nicholson, but it seems to be out of print now.Searching on the internet I've found two other books about (a) Jet Harris: 1. Jet Harris by Frederic P Miller/Agnes F Vandome/John McBrewster; 2. People from Kingsbury: Jet Harris with 8 other persons. Are those books of any interest or are they dealing with a complete different person, who never played a note in any band of name..?! The books are not that cheap to buy them on the off-chance."

I told him that the Dave Nicholson book had been completed - but never issued because of legal issues. I was very suspicious about the others and advised him not to part with any money. Some of these crooks have no shame whatsoever. Number 2 (above) can be freely downloaded here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:P ... _Kingsbury It's just a very brief entry. The scammer just prints it off and tarts it up by providing a cover and then ripping off some hapless customer. Number 1 (above) is just a collection of Wikipedia articles and other items culled from various Internet sources / sites. Some of the notes have been plundered from many contributors to ShadowMusic (myself included!!). All just downloaded, collated, a cover put on it and...hey presto!! A license to 'print money'!!! " Alphascript Publishing sells free articles as expensive books
An Amazon.com book search on 9 June 2009 gives 1009 (6 August, gives 1,859) "books" from Alphascript Publishing.[nan 1] 1003 of the books are described as "by John McBrewster, Frederic P. Miller, and Agnes F. Vandome". They are called editors in the book listings. It seems the only content of the many books is free Wikipedia articles with no sign that these three people have contributed to them.

The articles are often poorly printed with features such as missing characters from foreign languages, and numerous images of arrows where Wikipedia had links. It appears much better to read the original articles for free at the Wikipedia website than paying a lot of money for what has been described as a scam or hoax. Advertising for the books at Amazon and elsewhere does not reveal the free source of all the content. It is only revealed inside the books which may satisfy the license requirements for republishing of Wikipedia articles.

As an example of the "care" given to the books, the book "History of Georgia (country)" is about the European country Georgia but has a cover image of Atlanta in the American state Georgia.[nan 2] The Wikipedia article History of Georgia (country) does not make such a comical blunder.

PrimeHunter has compiled a list of the 1009 titles identified in June.

You have been warned!

Bests....Rob
