mic repairs

hi,i bought a sec/hand shure sm57 mic a while ago & thought i`d give it a try the other day,having had it stuck in a drawer
for ages, & yep! it dont work, just crackles abit when putting the lead in but otherwise nowt.
just wondered if anyone can recomend a repairer,preferably s.yorks area but anywhere considered.

I would start off by trying a different lead. If you can borrow one from somebody, that won't cost you anything, and in my experience, the lead is more likely than the mike to be faulty. Good luck.

Does it produce any sound at all eg when you tap it?

SM57s (and SM58s) have a transformer in the bottom of the housing. If you unscrew the housing you will be able to see the bottom of the mic capsule and the top of the transformer. There should be 2 wires going from the capsule to the transformer. Check these are intact. You can check to see if you have a circuit through the connector on the base of the mic to the transformer with a multimeter if you have one. If it looks like you have a problem in this area you can remove the XLR conncector from the housing to check the wiring (there should be 3 wires but maybe only 2 on some models). If you need to remove the transformer, this will be held in place with wax or hot glue or something similar and can be difficult to get out. It may be possible to release it by placing it in boiling water to soften the compound (remove or thoroughly protect the capsule first though!). You can test the capsule by directy connecting the 2 wires to an amp input (it works without the transformer). If the capsule is defective you may be able to get a replacement from Shure or an aftermarket replacement ... cheap fix but it won't be a real SM57 any more
