Shads BBC radio sessions

Postby ash » 09 Apr 2011, 19:19

I've tried in vain to get the various Shadsfax mags with details of the groups bbc radio sessions (rec,tx dates and songs performed ). Does anyone know of a site or book that lists their sessions with and without Cliff up to and including Licorice's tenure with the band ? I can't find one.
Paul Rumbol makes reference to a few on his Radio Luxembourg site but its not possible to form a complete listing and it looks like he made a few typos as there are one or two contradictions with dates and programme titles.
Can't believe EMI , the BBC and The Shadows couldn't come to an arrangement for a release years ago. Thank heavens for Rollercoaster Records.
How much of the groups radio output has survived one way or another ? Seems like Bernie Andrews kept quite a good collection on the side. Is there anything really significant missing ? I'm amazed at how much of the other 60's groups outputs have survived via home taping etc. and how much continues to surface.
Shame the same can't be said for tv appearances and concert performances of which there seems precious little.
Hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.
thanks

It's amazing that anything from any 60's band has survivied as the BBC used to wipe tapes as they saw no value in keeping them. A lot of stuff only survive on transcription discs that were sent to other stations so outakes or studio chatter no longer exist. Thanks BBC!
What would be nice to see is a box set of all surviving BBC sessions from the Shadows (without Cliff). There must be a lot of unreleased tracks in there.

I remember there was a disagreement over the copyright and ownership of the 1959-1963 recordings. The BBC had wiped their own tapes, but Bernie Andrews had made copies for himself. Bernie is now no more, but before his death he handed over the tapes. The recent 10" LP by Rollercoaster Records is the first of (I hope) some very promising releases. If these up to 1963 can be released by Rollercoaster, the ones from 1964-1974 could be released by the BBC themselves and/or EMI Records.

It would be great the finally have the BBC versions of amongst others "Walk Don't Run", "Perfidia" (these both in The Ventures' style), "Nivram" (with Brian Locking on bass), "Lady Penelope", "Scotch On The Socks", "Jigsaw", "Tennessee Waltz", "Bombay Duck", "Lara's Theme", "Snap, Crackle And How's Your Dad", "The Wild Roses" and the complete eight-track set from John Peel's "Sounds On Sunday" from March 1974, probably the group's last BBC radio recording, apart from interviews of course.

A sorry saga indeed. I did all of the research on this many, many years ago....and then the whole project fell through for reasons already hinted at. It was the BBC themselves who were the main problem. John Beecher at Rollercoaster acquired the tapes from Bernie Andrews. Yes.....1960 is now out of copyright - so John's future releases on Rollercoaster should be absolutely fantastic. The 10" LP already out was superb & we still await the CD (featuring more tracks) of Cliff / Shads 1959 BBC tracks. Wonderful. Years ago EMI / BBC could have had a real winner on their hands - ruined by legal wranglings and 'politics'.

I can't access all of my original data at the moment & i'm not sure that I want to go to all of the bother of re - typing it all up here. Maybe I'll scan the relevant Shadsfax pages sometime.

Bests.....Rob
