The Chuck Berry programme was recorded during the 'My Ding-a-Ling' tour at the BBC Television Theatre on Shepherds Bush Green. Chuck turned up during the afternoon to check things out and I took the opportunity to ask a question. At TVT we'd recorded a long series of 'In Concert' programmes where the various artists usually tried out new material in amongst their established repertoire. Hoping to hear some new CB songs I said "What will you be playing tonight, Mr Berry?". His answer? "I'm gonna play all ma hits" - which he did!
The nearest to a 'new' number was when he asked for requests, "a ques'que vou voulez" as he put it (this chat and what followed was edited out of the TV version). Someone calls out "Johnny B. Goode!" Berry replies "We close with that". Then a female voice calls out "Rock Around The Clock!" Berry, half amused and half mystified, says "What Kind Of What?" A male voice shouts 'Rock'n'Roll Music' and with a "Comin' right up!" Berry launches into it.
However, he next decides to play the 'request' and after a false start ("Boy, if that ain't a Chuck Berry number what is?") he picks a medium tempo and proceeds to improvise around 'Clock' while the band (Rocking Horse*) gradually pick up behind him.
In this way the one and only version of 'Rock Around The Clock' as an instrumental was played by Chuck Berry!

* not the same band as the 1980s Rocking Horse which had Mac Poole on the drums ('cause i checked with Mac)
