Sad to learn that Jerry Leiber has died. Leiber/Stoller partnership one of the greatest.

I heard it on the news this morning too. Very sad indeed. As a partnership, Leiber/Stoller were as recognisable as Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Bacharach/David and to a degree also Marvin/Welch/Bennett.

Jailhouse Rock: a masterpiece. For years I thought Elvis was singing: "Went to a party at the county jail" only to discover later he was actually singing: "The warden threw a party at the county jail..."

Martin.

It's very sad. They wrote some great songs and Jerry was a real character.

Sad news about Jerry Leiber. He was the 'wordsmith' in the partnership yet it is noticeable that the radio and TV obits have only mentioned L&S artists like Elvis and Sam Cooke. In many ways more representative of Leiber's work were the 'stories in song' that he created for The Coasters (Charlie Brown, Little Egypt, Along Came Jones, etc), The Robins (Riot In Cell Block No.9) and The Cheers (Black Leather Jacket And Motorcycly Boots) where he injected the lyrics with a rich vein of humour.
