Participation of Shadows-members on Cliff Richard recordings

Postby iefje » 14 Sep 2011, 13:25

Apart from backing Cliff Richard as a group, The Shadows' members have contributed to a lot of Cliff's recordings individually, either during the Cliff & The Shads period (1958-1968) or from 1969 onwards. Familiar examples are of course "Throw Down A Line" and "The Joy Of Living" by Cliff & Hank, but also less familiar tracks, like "Love, Truth And Emily Stone", which also features Hank, but is not credited as such.
I understand that very early on, Tony Meehan was featured on the 1959 "Cliff Sings" album, not only on the eight Cliff & The Shadows tracks, but also as drummer as part of Norrie Paramor's orchestra on the eight 'ballads' on the album. I think he was also the only Shadow to be featured on "Beat Out That Rhythm On A Drum", included on the 1961 "Listen To Cliff!" album.
In 1969, 1970 and 1971, Brian Bennett was also featured on several of Cliff's lesser known singles, one of which was "She's Leaving You", the B-side to "Big Ship", which Brian also wrote and conducted.
Brian was very heavily involved in Cliff's recordings in the second half of the 1970's, from Cliff's 1976 album "I'm Nearly Famous" to the 1978 "Green Light" and all associated singles.
Does anybody have definitive list of recordings which feature individual Shadows?

Hi All

I would be interested in seeing a list also.

But, the same question might come up, who would you include as "The Shadows"?

The Book 'Cliff Richard -The Complete Chronicle' by Mike Read, Nigel Goodall and Peter Lewry published by Hamlyn 1993 includes history and details of all Cliff's recording sessions from 1958 to 1993, and is a good source of 'who did what and when'. Details of each session have as much info as in now available from archive material etc, an example for instance:

5 November 1963
ABBEY Road
Film Soundtrack recordings for Wonderful Life

Wonderful Life (18) Wonderful Life
On The Beach A-side

Lead Vocal: Cliff Richard
Guitars: Hank Marvin/ Bruce Welch
Bass: Brian Locking
Drums: Brian Bennett

Producer: Norrie Paramour
Engineer: Malcolm Addey
Recorded In: Studio 3
Session Hours: 7.00pm - 10.45pm

I find it a valuable reference, it does have a lot of pics and other details too, well worth the money if you can find a copy.
Oh, and I bet you thought it would have been John Rostill not Liquorice on those tracks!;)

Hello Ian,

I have looked at this website quite often and I must admit, it's a fantastic detailed website. However, for some of the tracks, involving The Shadows, the session personnel listed is not always correct, I'm sorry to say.

Hi,
Have you mentioned this to the sites owner, as I know he's a perfectionist (from personal experience, I have helped out in a small way on some parts of his site), I'm sure he would welcome any corrections.

There are known "issues" with the personnel listings in the Lewry/Goodall book.

For instance, Do You Wanna Dance has Tony Meehan credited even though the recording wasn't made until after he had left the group.

Yes. It was definitely Brian Bennett on "Do You Want To Dance". I know that this particular basic error really really irks Warren Bennett. It is puzzling. OK - we all make mistakes. "The Complete Recording Sessions" came out in 1991. The error would have surely been pointed out to Pete Lewry and Nigel Goodall -but it was repeated in "The Complete Chronicle" (1993). Ok....still not good. But......the fact that it was repeated AGAIN in the revised / updated edition from 1995...isn't good enough IMHO.

Bests....Rob :D

After that, the error was again repeated in the session details chapter of the 12" booklet of the stunning June 1997 4 CD boxed set "The Rock 'N' Roll Years 1958-1963".
