In thinking about it, I realise that I have only been a Shads fan for a few years, though I have been a Cliff fan for 30+ years. And when I first came upon MWF on YouTube a few years ago, I did not hesitate to check them out because (lucky for me) I had not yet become attached to the stereotype of The Shads playing Apache. I just didn't know otherwise at that point in time.

You know how people type in those comments on YouTube, beneath the videos...and most of the time, the things people say are completely "way out there." I actually learned something from someone's YouTube comments. It was definitely something said in connection with MWF...probably a video of Lady of the Morning. I remember seeing Hank wearing a wild-looking rainbow-striped sweater vest! Somebody commented that if you like this song, you'll probably like the Shads' albums called Specs Appeal and Live at the Paris Olympia. So, I took them up on that suggestion and ordered those two CDs from Amazon.com. (All I had was 50 Golden Greats, at the time.) That was the beginning of a very expensive hobby! Best move I ever made, though.

I certainly have never met John Farrar, but I've always thought he brought a certain creative energy to the group. I give him a lot of credit for playing second lead guitar in a band where Hank Marvin was the person playing lead guitar. John had enjoyed some success before he joined MWF and The Shads, so he wasn't a kid or anything, but it still seems a huge task to undertake...to join a band and play alongside of Hank Marvin. I'm glad he did, though.

Best wishes,
Donna

Marvin Welch & Farrar music was much more sophisticated music than the Shadows', but for most people (including myself) sophisticated music doens't automatically means exciting music, and this is why their records didn't appeal to a large number of people...
I still prefer the shadows' raw sound and tunes from the early years !

Long live Marvin, Welch and Farrar. And how about a reunion tour...?

I`m with you - LIVE they had the much better quality in vocals than some oft the
other ones named here.

MWF were fabulous. CSNY were ok but I much preferred listening to Graham Nash when he was with the Hollies. Far more va va voom!

Im sure at the time it was exciting and fresh for Hank and Bruce but any success they had came off the back of The Shadows..lets be honest. They tried and they did make good music, Be thankful 20 Golden Greats came along...that my friends is why Hank and Bruce are not playing bingo halls today..Isnt hindsight wonderful

And a great difference beetwenn CSNY & MWF is the musical different origin and background. CSNY comes from country
music - " Teach .... " ... they have a lot of country style elements in their music. MWF I think NOT !

Hank or Bruce has once said, when they performed under The Shadows banner again, their audience of course got the instrumentals again, but were also quite willing to listen to the vocal stuff. What a pity the first MW & F album stalled at number 30 in the charts, because of a strike. It could have been a bigger hit. Quite unbelievable why the second album did not chart, just like the only M & F album from two years later.

I love "A Thousand Conversation" on M,W&F 's first album.

That was so great that it became my favourite song of my life.

And I decided to never divorce, listning that song.

Also, the Beatles coudn't make that sad and beautiful song.

The Staff of Abbey Road Studios love them very much.

Long live M,W&F.
