Thanks so much for that Bob. I wonder then, when Mansfield Town FC were still a football league team, if the fans came across the "Apache" chant at Aldershot? It's more than likely I should think. As well as always bringing back happy musical memories for Shadows' fans - it's good to know that "Apache" also conjures up happy memories of your late son. Again, thank you so much Bob.

Agreed Jayne. I was at Field Mill yesterday. Oh well. Mind you....."Apache" was played in full over the 'stadium' PA. Great stuff. That's obviously where the chant comes from...but it's recent. I'll try to find out who is the big Shadows fan in the Stags hierarchy. Football supporters being what they are....the 'chant' is the first part of the main theme. But....they start it a third higher (in the minor key). Because of that they can't modulate into the major key (it would get far too high for them) and thus repeat it exactly the same in the minor key again. The 'gallop' does not feature. But.....Mansfield have a big centre half with the unlikely name of Exodus Geohagon. He can throw the ball as far as Stoke's Rory Delap. As he 'winds up' for big throw - ins, Mansfield fans 'chant' the drum intro to "Apache" - accelerating all the while until Exodus launches his 'exocet'!!

Purely for Jayne (& everyone else of a 'Northern bent' LOL)...the stadium announcer (obviously a genuine Mansfield type) was priceless. Before KO a young group of teenaged cheerleaders gave a spirited display. As they waited for the signal to start, they were greeted (after initial introduction) with...."Now then you young lasses, sort thi' sens aht" (Translation: Young ladies please prepare yourselves to commence..LOL)

Dont think this chants popularity is due directly to the Shadows, but rather 'Michael Viners incredible Bongo Band' whose version ( recorded in the early 70's) has often been sampled by hip-hop artistes. A lot of footy crowds have a similar chant since the tunes use on the William Hill betting advert!!

Thanks Mike. i'm sure that you're right. Yes....the William Hill Betting ads...they're the ones. But, anyway, The Shadows' version of "Apache" is now regularly heard in full at Mansfield Town FC. Who would have thought it???

I've just googled 'apache on the william hill betting advert' and am amazed at how many times the melody has been recorded and/or sampled!! So Jerry Lordan must have earnt a fortune in royalties! Or did he?

I'm sure that he must have done. I do know that (following his divorce from Petrina Lordan) jerry went through a very dificult time both emotionally and financially. It was his relationship with Claudine which hauled him back from the depths of despair and led to many happy years in later life. But....Jerry had to sell the publishing rights to many of his own compositions. I am pretty certain though that he managed to hang on to "Apache".
