Mike, I think if you subscribe, as I do, you get it a little earlier than it's out in the shops, just a couple of days or so. Mine arrived yesterday, so perhaps if you try again later in the week you may be in luck. If all else fails, I could always scan it in if anyone wants to see it.

Ulrich! Brilliant, many thanks. So....the chronolgy fits. Jim: "Oh Boy!" (as you say) was broadcast from the Hackney Empire. "Boy Meets Girls" came from Didsbury. So, fine...the retrospective chronology fits. I've never read the book mentioned & I'm sure that the author is indeed ultra fastidious. Not having read the book - I was unaware of the Gene Vincent anecdote. Joe Brown was cetainly the guitarist on the show. He's always been adamant that the first time that he approached Hank with the Meazzi was in Edmonton. I do agree with (Jim) your previous points - looking back. I did interview Joe Brown at some length c. 20 yrs ago. So when he said that he 'gave' the Meazzi to Hank - I took his comment at face value. More likely they met in a dressing room somewhere (Edmonton), Joe gave Hank a quick demonstration and 'gave' the Meazzi to Hank probably for a day or two to try it out. As the two of them lived in London, one supposes that it would have been fairly straightforward for Hank to get the Meazzi back to Joe or for Joe to collect it. The chance to see Gene Vincent in Manchester would have also allowed Hank & Joe to spend a little more time together & for Hank to hear the echo unit in performance (rehearsals). So...yes....OK. I'm convinced!! LOL. Hank then (as described) decided to get a brand new one for himself. Joe Brown has always maintained that he didn't care for the Meazzi echo unit at all. He didn't carry on using it after 1959. Anyway - if he didn't literally 'give it' (or sell it) to Hank, then I wonder who acquired it from him? We'll probably never know. But...whatever the 'absolute' truth...it was Joe Brown who convinced Hank to get a Meazzi.

Bests.....Rob :)

Yes Jayne you are right about subscriptions being better value and
convenient although I only buy the Magazine when there are articles
that interest me.
Saving£1 per issue of say Record Collector Magazine as a regular
purchase on an annual direct debit is value . The 13 issue sub of
£39 wouldnt earn £13 interest at the Bank!!!
Todays money saving tip for us pensioners!!!

Currently listening to the BBC6 repeat of Guitar greats, in which Hank repeats the story about going to Manchester from Liverpool to meet Gene Vincent, and being shown the echo box by Joe Brown. The programme dates from 1983.

He also mentions that they heard that the demo for Kon-tiki may have been by Joe Brown... I wonder where that is?

Thanks George. You (meaning me!) sometimes forget these things after nearly 30 years!! Fascinating to hear that Joe Brown may have demo'd "Kon - Tiki". Partly hi - jacking this thread.. Has anyone actually ever heard or come across the supposed demo of "Apache" by Jim Gunner (of "Hoolee Jump" fame)??
