A very impressed, Luigi

Yeah, I am sure you are 100% correct. I was just meaning based upon his playing with the Shads, which of course is now past-tense. I'm afraid I haven't really heard anything from him post 1989.

I thought that Alan Tarney was also an absolutely BRILLIANT bass player. If I am honest, I'd say that my favourites were Tarney, Jones and Rostill - although this does not mean that they were necessarily the best, just the ones who's playing I prefer.

Hasnt Bruce siad that John Rostill was the best bass player the Shads had - but those comments were pre Jones and Griffiths!

Hi,

Going full circle I can't honestly say I have ever heard a Shads recording, concert etc where the bass and drum playing was not first class, throughout their career whichever bassist or drummer. Ask people to vote and you get a result, not necessarily what you expect. Just look at our fine MP's at Westminster.

I agree about the records Luigi. Every player did just what was needed. If there's any Shadows record I'm not keen on, it's never because of the playing.

Well that's a quirky interpretation. Under one narrow definition of Shadow, he was right too!

To Abstamaria,

Hi Andy,

yes, and according to my very old VOX leaflet (the one with the shads on the front) it says on the Bass amps (also AC 30) at the end,
bass amp 5 gns extra. So there were bass versions of the old VOXes...

The East Yorkshire Shads Club has the Vox AC30 bass amp that used to belong to John Rostill and which was later acquired by Brian Locking. A number of us have had the privilege of playing through it. On its own it cannot compete with the rest of the amps on stage but when mic'd up through PA gear it's fine. I wouldn't say special but perfectly OK.
