We are very grateful to John Waterman of Solent Records who has kindly donated his remaining stock of Jet’s “Diamonds Are Trumps” CD to raise money for the Jet Harris Memorial Fund. This is a great album by Jet, which also features Bobby Graham. The tracklisting is as follows: Theme For A Fallen Idol / Time Is Tight / Dance With the Guitar Man / Wipe Out / You Can’t Sit Down / Diamonds / Man With the Golden Arm / Gonzales / No Other Baby / Soul Limbo / Barney’s Blues / Watermelon Man / Theme For Something Really Important / Tequila.
Jet met Outlaw Bobby Graham in late 1961 when he first visited Joe Meek’s studio at 304, Holloway Road. Bobby Graham would shortly leave to join Joe Brown’s Bruvvers. Meek, meanwhile, had drafted in Tony Meehan (who had just quit the Shadows) to help out with drumming and arranging chores in the studio. Jet would also exit the Shadows a few months later and Jack Good was clandestinely preparing him for a solo career (anticipating that the volatile situation within the Shadows, particularly between Bruce and Je, could ignite at any moment).
Fast forward 40 years and the two legendary music figures began their collaboration on a series of sessions which resulted in the splendid “Diamonds Are Trumps” CD – which was originally issued on Solent Records in 2002. They were augmented by several other fine musicians including guitarist John Clare (sessions with Blue Mink, the Troggs & Paul McCartney), bassist Pete Shaw (Chris Rea, David Knopfler), saxophonist Angel Veltmeijer and keyboards wizard Andy Butler. Our good friend John Skelton was responsible for the design and artwork. A great band and the two ‘legends’ were both on fine form throughout. A really great rockin’ CD. Both players gave their all to produce some excellent performances on many splendid tracks. If you didn’t obtain a copy of this splendid CD twelve years ago – then now’s your chance. Highly recommended.
Just recently – John Waterman (owner of Solent Records - who generously financed the whole project) met up with Audrey Knapp. John was delighted to hear that the J H M Fund was still extant and that Jet was still fondly remembered by loyal fans. To that end he has been truly magnanimous in donating the entire remaining stock of c. 100 mint copies of “Diamonds Are Trumps” CD to the J H M Fund to be sold in order to raise more money for such a worthy cause. Very fitting as both Jet and Bobby sadly fell victim to cancer. This CD is a tremendous and fitting testament to both their memories. To paraphrase my good ‘Pipeline’ friend Dave Burke: “Essential! Please purchase immediately!!” R B
Please help to support research into cancer of unknown primary and also enjoy Jet’s music at the same time! For details of how to obtain your copy please go to the ‘News’ page of the Jet Harris Memorial Fund website, or PM us for further information. Thank you! http://jetharrismemorialfund.org/news.html
