Nothing much like the "original single" with the "lead" break being particularly disappointing.

Gernerally I prefer the Shadows' hits sound and playing as they were done in the early days, apart for one exception : I prefer the recent way Hank played "The Savage" (as he did during the "Final Tour" and the "Reunion tour") !

I think the reason Hank has never played that ''Savage'' lead improvisation since the original single was released is because ''he can't remember it!' It was a long time ago after all.

I heard him play it (very similar to the single) on the "20 Golden Dates" tour in 1977...

He abandoned the recorded version early on, Humdrum! I find it very difficult to play, actually. Good you heard a similar version live, Jim.

Didier, we're different there!

Best to all,

The answer to the question is no.
I find it difficult to see how anyone can replicate what we perceive as that sound, when they don't understand what it is.
The term has been loosely used in my opinion, as my own perception of that sound is that of the 1960/62 period of Shadows recordings from Saturday Dance through to Wonderful Land including the first album, part of the second album and the first EP - The Shadows. After that things began to vary a lot. But there's a special tone on those early recordings which for me is THAT SOUND.
Having said that I enjoy everything else, although the later sounds are easier to achieve. :)

Hi Abstamaria, you are not alone i also find it difficult to play. I think the clue lies in ''improvised'. it must be hard to remember how to play an improvised piece within hours/minutes of playing it & Hank rather than sit listening to how he once played it & trying to emulate the moment decided to change it completely.

I think the right hand picking technique of the middle part of the single version of The Savage is much more difficult to play, you need to really be on it, if you drop a note there is no safety net, all the other versions are much easier to play.
