Just watched the guys on Paul O'Grady show and as ever Brian wasn't there during the interviews. Ive noticed over the years he always seems to be missing at these times. Is he shy?
It's just not Brian's sort of thing. I have been lucky enough to speak to him at some length on a handful of occasions. He is very amiable and great company - but, he's always happy to leave the TV / Press etc interviews to Bruce and Hank. Not that Brian has anything in particular against meeting people. He's just that type of personality. He loves being on stage - performing. He loves his work and he loves his music - but he's never particularly cared for the 'showbiz' side of things. Years and years ago he hated having to act and mess about in the pantomimes. He also genuinely asked the producer (discussing a proposed Ckiff / Shadows film that was never made - about Cliff inheriting a ranch in the USA - with fantasy Cowboy / Indian fights etc) if his character could be killed off within the first five minutes! He was serious!!! Brian doesn't give many interviews. He's just happy to stay in the background (or not be there at all) for many media type events.
My experience bears out what Rob has said. I went backstage in 1971 (I think!) to record a radio interview with Cliff after a show in which Brian was the musical director. I caught Brian for a few words and he was very kind to me, nice and amusing. At the same time I sensed that he was relieved when I moved on to Cliff!
Typical of Drummers, in my experience - although a small amount of bias IS admitted - "kind"; "nice"; "amusing" etc etc................... We're usually happy to leave all the "Lords of Creation" stuff to Singers and Guitarists! Regards Paul
