A very pleasant surprise for Christmas

Postby abel » 31 Dec 2015, 06:24

Hi All,

A belated Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year to all.

Just wanted to share with you the pleasant surprise I got myself for Christmas.
I have been looking for a Guitar Clean Boost and I hastily bought an EP Booster pedal.
It's a very good pedal until I heard about the Strymon OB.1 Optical Compressor and Clean Boost.
I read about it and found out that it was the cleanest boost available.
I was really interested in making my sound thicker, louder without changing the tone.

I bought a used one and received it Yesterday. I attached pictures of the front and the back.
It has everything I really need beside the echo:
- A very clean boost function with a switch to boost the Treble, the Mid or the Flat.
- 2 internal Dip switches in the back of the unit to adjust to Higher or Lower Boost corner / peak
frequency for the Treble and the Mid (I have no clue what this means). (see the Back picture of the Strymon)
- A mild Compressor function
All functions are independent and can also be combined.

I tried it with a conventional setting and it really reminded me of the guitar sound in Atlantis.
I started tweaking it (see the picture of the front) and I was very surprised to hear a sound truly reminiscent of the
one in Atlantis.
I kept the settings as is and will try to record Atlantis live sometimes this weekend.
I only have the MagicStomp and the Strymon directly to my Fender Hot Deville 4 X 10.
I hope my Q3HD will capture the sound as it is in the room.

Hi all,

Didier,

The only weak point is that the compressor is not as powerful as a standalone compressor, but it does add some narrowness to the shape of the sound but with much
less sustain.

Have a safe and healthy new year,

Blessings,
Abel

Hi Dave,

Not that I want you to get another gear as you already have many, but for me, my pedal set will be the Strymon and
the MagicStomp from now on.
Even though you would be able to get way more out of it then I, it's still simple enough for me to use the main features.
It has everything I need besides the echo: EQ, selective Boost and some compression.

Blessings,
Abel
