The Silhouettes/Ep releases green/black labels

Postby tim.cooper5 » 01 Mar 2016, 11:49

Hi All,

Two subjects in one email!

Having a a it of a sort out in my collection and came across the following 45.

The Silhouettes "Hot Licks" 1981 MCA 740.
It's a melody of 8 Shadows tracks and 2 of Cliffs.
Produced by Jeff Jarratt & Don Reedman, engineered by Peter Vince, so a connection there.
The 'b' side is "Behind Every Cliff There Is A Siver Shadow" which is credited to the producers.
Does anyone have any info on this record at all please?

Eps.
I have the ep "Hits form the Young Ones" by Cliff and the Shadows two times, one copy green label and one copy black label.
Does anyone know how many of either Cliffs or The Shadows eps were released with both labels and which one would be the rariest of the two?

Many Thanks

Tim

Hi Tim,

All Shadows EPs up to "The Shadows No. 2" (SEG 8148) were originally released on the green label and re-issued on the black-blue label (with quite some variations of the black-blue label). The next EP "The Shadows No. 3" (SEG 8166) was on the green label only. The following "The Boys" was on the green label only for the stereo release (ESG 7881) and on the black-blue label only for the mono issue (SEG 8193).
I don't know for sure about Cliff's EPs but I think at least most of them came out on both labels.
Regarding the rarity, it depends on the specific EP and on the label variation.

Best wishes,

Ulrich

The turquoise label was discontinued in early 1963. Thereafter, both mono and stereo pressings (original and reissue) were released on black labels with the kingfisher blue "Columbia" logo. Many of Cliff's EPs were released after that.

I have a vague recollection of reading at the time this was released that it was Martin Jenner (Cliff's guitarist at the time) who played this
How true it is I don't know

Thanks Bob, it would be interesting to find out if that is true or not.

Thanks for detailed info. Wish there was such detail in the Cliff Eps somewhere.
Strange that "The Shadows No 3". Was only put out on green label only.

Thanks Again

Hi Tim,

Regarding "The Shadows No. 3", there was no re-pressing as the sales were probably not that good. A reason could be that all tracks were taken from the first LP.

About Cliff's EPs I don't have complete information but this is what I know:
All EPs upt to "Cliff Richard (No. 2)" (SEG 8168) came out on the turquoise label (mono and stere releases). The next EP "Time For Cliff And The Shadows" was on the black/blue label for the mono release and on the turquoise label for the stereo release. All following EPs hat the black/blue label.
Regarding blue/black re-pressings of the turquoise releases I KNOW of no stereo copy. Mono copies are existing at least of the following EPs: SEG 7895 / 7903 / 7910 / 7971 / 8050 / 8133 / 8159, but they might also exist more.

Thanks for the detailed info there Ulrich.

Slightly off topic, found the following link on record sleeves.

There is a pretty definitive resource for UK singles and EPs at http://www.45cat.com

If the sleeve (of an EP) or the labels (of a single OR EP) are not to be found there, it's a fair bet that it doesn't exist.
