Shadows in Wolverhampton?

Postby Ryan » 22 Aug 2014, 19:19

Hi All,
Does anyone know if The Shadows ever played in the Wolverhampton area? If so, where? I live in a little town between Wolverhampton and Walsall, which is called Willenhall. If anybody knows it, there used to be a swimming baths (although it is no longer open, the building is still there) behind the library. I was told that in the 60's they used to cover the baths up with boards and host dances and bands playing there, 1 of these bands were supposedly 'The Rolling Stones'. God knows how true it is, if anyone knows any info it would be much appreciated.
Cheers

It certainly is, i'm actually in Portobello, so not that far away :P
I came to 1 of your Hankies meetings a couple of weeks ago with my missus, thought it was great, enjoyed watching you lot playing, wouldn't mind having a go myself 1 of the days.

Thanks for that, didn't think they would have, i'd assume they'd have probably played in the bigger venues in Birmingham. Just wondered if they'd ever ventured down our way.

Apart from quite some concerts in the 60s with Cliff heading the bill and as Marvin, (Welch) & Farrar in the 70s the Shads had concerts on their own in Wolverhampton at the following dates:

29.10.1987 Wolverhampton (Grand Hall)
01.06.1989 Wolverhampton (Grand Hall)
30.10.1990 Wolverhampton (Grand Hall)
31.10.1990 Wolverhampton (Grand Hall)
08.11.1994 Wolverhampton (Civic Theatre) [Hank Marvin & Brian Bennett]

Hi UlrichS,
Thanks for that. Did they appear in Wolverhampton earlier than the 80's with Cliff then?

I came down from the frozen North to Cannock near Wolverhampton in 1970. I watched the Shadows live for the first time in a building near the Wulfrun Centre in 1971 (I think). Gene Pitney was the top of the bill. I believe that the building was normally a cinema and I'm sure that it isn't there any more.

I hear from the locals in Cannock that the Shadows played in a local hall called The Danilo back in the 60s. Hank confirmed this when talking to the audience in Birmingham on the Final Tour. The Danilo got pulled down before I got here. I'm told that The Beatles and The Stones also played at the Danilo in our little town.

Update: After 10 years absence, now a born-again Hankie

Hi Risky
Greetings from sunny Somerset.
It was probably The Gaumont which stood on the corner opposite Central Library. Was demolished and a Wilkinson's is on the site.
BTW -found a poster dated March 1963 with Chris Montez as TOTB. Guess who was very bottom of the Bill? - The Beatles!!!
Cheers
