When did Hank stop playing his Burns

Postby Billyboygretsch » 23 Feb 2017, 11:51

It's probably on here somewhere but I can't find it.
Burns were used by the Shadows until their split in 1968. I know Burns were used on some of the Marvin Welch Farrar numbers / videos. So when did Hank make the switch back to the Stratocaster and what numberwas the Burns Marvin last used on ?
I understand Burns were not endorsed from Burns Actualisers and that in 2004 some were ordered from BG.
What happened in between ?
Thanks

Hank's Burns was stolen from a van in 1972. He could have purchased a new one of course, but he decided to go back to the Fender guitar.

He didn't have much choice as Burns had ceased trading so no new replacements were available! He need a guitar quickly and purchased a Strat from a Manchester store.

IIRC, Hank's Burns guitar(s) were stolen around 1971/2, and as there was no endorsement deal as Baldwin no longer made or sold the guitars, he bought his own Strat around that time.

I find it interesting that, despite the 1960s being the Shads most popular/legendary period, and being automatically associated with Fenders, 34346 was only used for about 2 years, the rosewood models for about another 18 months and the white ones for about 6 months until they changed to Burns (and later Baldwin badged Burns)- which they then used for about 7 years!

I agree on 1972. From memory, Hank was using the Burns guitars at least up until about May or June of that year on BBC TV's Cliff Richard Show on Saturdays.

Where I don't agree is in Hank being able to buy a new one. Baldwin had ceased operating their UK business in 1970 and 1971had seen a mass sell off of their stock, with various guitars disposed of for low prices. Top Gear in Denmark Street, London, had offered Baldwin Shadows Basses - new NOS - for £59.

When Hank's Burns was first stolen didn't he use 34346 temporarily? I can remember reading it somewhere not too long ago and also around that period I remember seeing him on a TV show with MWF playing Marmaduke and he had a white Strat (not knowing at the time that it could have been 34346).

I think you're correct, Paul, I read an interview with Hank where he said that he borrowed 34346 back for about six months and enjoyed it so much he went out and bought the mid-70s white one from Barrats.

Hi

It's interesting that when they were stolen, there was Hank's Martin, two Gibson acoustics, a six and a twelve and both his Burns. John Farrar was using 34346 at that time and Roy Lemmon, who was the roadie - the guitars were stolen from outside his flat - told me they must have just taken what they could carry and that when he was alerted the next guitar visible was 34346!! So it had a lucky escape!!

Hank then used it for a while until he got the Strat from Barratt's of Manchester. He told me he needed it as he didn't own an Electric guitar at that time!!

Regards

Stuart

So the last number recorded using a Marvin must have been something from Marvin Welch Farrar. wonder what it was ? Marmaduke seems to be very late March 1972 ?

Wonder what happened to those guitars? Probably changed hands a lot over the years, if they still exist.
