Hank Marvin - 1st LP (First Pressing)

Postby manofmystery » 08 Oct 2009, 13:50

Hi - I have been after a first pressing of Hank marvin's 1st solo LP for many years now to complete my collection.
Recently Eil.com advertised both the first and second issue of the album in mint condition. I have the mono version of this album which came with a Blue/Black Columbia label and I thought that a first pressing of the Stereo album would be the same.
I bought the album and it arrived yesterday. It came with the Silver/Black Columbia label and I have checked it with my copy (which I bought in 1976/1977) and can find no difference between the two (even down to the information in the run out groove).
I have contacted Eil.com to see if they can throw light on the differences but the "expert" is away on a buying trip and will not be back until the end of the month. The salesman assured me that there is a difference but he cannot say what.
Although he has said the "expert" will call me on his return I would like to find out before then.
Does anyone know of the differences between a first and second pressing of the album?
Is there a difference or are Eil telling porky's

Thanks for any help

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul,
By 1969 stereo LPs were finally becoming more common / popular than their mono counterparts. So, for starters - the mono version of "Hank Marvin" is much rarer / scarcer than the stereo release. I bought the stereo LP back in 1969 and I'm sure that it was black / silver. Record companies were sometimes stingy though and I suspect that there was (somewhere in the bowels of EMI Hayes) a stock of blue - black labels to be used up -which were presumably used on the mono "Hank Marvin" LP (which is not to say that there MIGHT be some black / silver label copies of the same). Again (& I could be wrong) - the difference between 1st and subsequent pressings of the stereo LP is likely to be the sleeve itself. In 1969 the edges of the outer cover had a strip of card turned over and glued on the outside of the 'seams' (known as foldback sleeves I think). By 1970 / 71 this feature had disappreared and the outer cover had continuous / integral seams - as it were. Apart from being mono or stereo there were definitely no differences as regards the tracks themselves. To quote my old friend Sir James of Nugent - 'Hope this helps'.

Best wiashes,

Rob :D

Rob - Thanks for your reply. Both my sleeves have the flip back cover. I have all The Shadows Columbia albums in all UK variants and the Hank marvin LP was the only one I thought I was missing. However I have scanned the sleeve, the record label and run out groove, I can't see any difference but Eil.com assure me there is but as I said they can't say until the "expert" returns at the end of the month. If there is any difference, it must be very minute.

Thanks again Rob

Hi Paul,
It will be interesting to hear what they say. Possibly missing something like E J Day printers (?) or 'file under music; popular' or the tiny date code from the bottom r/h corner. Something along those lines maybe? Do please let us know what Eli.com have to say.

Best wishes,

Rob :)

Rob - It's got all those. The file under.../printers name/date code.
I'll update the thread when I find out (or if I have returned the item for a refund because they got it wrong!)

Thanks again Rob

Thanks Paul - I was doing all that from memory - not having looked at those particular sleeves / LPs for well over 20 years!

Best wishes,

Hi paul

I bought this LP when it first came out, can't remember if it's mono or stereo but suspect stereo
I'll have a look when I get home to see if there is any difference to what you describe

I'll post my findings later

Hi Paul,

We seem to be like-minded regarding collecting of Shadows albums.
I have the following variations in my collection of which I include scans of the A side label and the upper right corner of the sleeve's backside:

MONO SX 6352
three-sided flipback sleeve
black-silver label with one EMI box
'MADE IN GT. BRITAIN' plus 'SOLD IN UK SUBJECT...' printed at the bottom perimeter

STEREO SCX 6352 - variation 1
three-sided flipback sleeve
black-silver label with one EMI box
'MADE IN GT. BRITAIN' printed at the bottom perimeter

STEREO SCX 6352 - variation 2
two-sided flipback sleeve
black-silver label with two EMI boxes
'MADE IN GT. BRITAIN' printed at the bottom perimeter

STEREO SCX 6352 - variation 3
no flipback sleeve with different printing on top and bottom
black-silver label with two EMI boxes
''MADE IN GT. BRITAIN' printed at the end of the top perimeter printing

I have never seen a blue-black label release of the mono release. Could you please post a scan?

Best wishes,

Ulrich

PS. The scans of the mono variations come with the next posting.
