Fender Super Champ XD + TVS3 Combination

Postby Tab » 13 Aug 2011, 14:37

Some time ago, I bought, second hand, a little Fender Super Champ XD after being impressed by its sound listening to a friend's.

I use this all the time at home and, with my TVS, I find I can get a very close approximation to most of the early sounds. At home volume levels it easily outstrips my AC30 for tone. I have spent a lot of time trying to record the sound produced by this combination without the inevitable alteration to tone through mixing desks etc.

See what you think.

57 Re-issue Strat DR 12-52 strings through TVS3 and Super Champ XD D.I.'d into a TASCAM 788 workstation. Original backing track with no residual lead guitar overspill.

Hi Terry,

That's close enough for me !!!!

Great playing and a great authentic sound.

I also have a Super Champ XD and agree that the tone you can get is superb.

I use mine at home and have used it for small gigs, I have also used it miked up for outdoor gigs. The beauty of it is, it is so light and easy to carry - my days of lugging heavy amps are over.

Best Regards, Dave

Excellent result. Considering the cost of a TVS3, it's great to know that if you don't have enough money left to buy an expensive amp, you still can have a good sound with a budget one ! ;)

Thanks for your comments Guys.

Dave, I've tried micing up before but going through the PA and another set of EQs somehow detracts from the original sound, which is why I had so much trouble recording this track so that it sounds like the live amp/echo combination. I'd be interested to know what settings you use.

We get a very good sound at the Sussex Club with the AC30s and the TVS/Q20 - the AC30 is at its best at higher volumes - but it would be nice to compare that with the Super Champ combination at the same volume.

Kind regards,

Terry

Excellent tone and playing, did you alter the stock W-Land patch on the TVS ?

Thanks Keith, Roger.

No alteration to the WL TVS patch, Keith.
