Shadow Music (The Mono Album)

Postby manofmystery » 23 Sep 2011, 08:58

Hi,

To while away some time whilst the family watched Emmerdale and Coronation Street I had a look through my Mono Shadows albums. Both the centre lables for the mono pressing of Shadow Music show a publication date of 1965 (although the album sleeve show 1966).
Was 1965 the planned release date for the mono pressing or are both lables a mis-print.

Regards

Well, that is most unusual and interesting!! Of course, "The Sound Of The Shadows" was the 1965 LP and the pattern - hits compilations notwithstanding - (until 1967) was always one album per year. However, it wasn't unknown for EMI to have stockpiles of 'blank' or virtually 'blank' labels - which they would like to use up! It's certainly something that I've never noticed nor even thought about before even!! Had to go and dig out my own vinyl copy (stereo) of "Shadow Music" from the loft - the date on the label of that one is most definitely 1966. Hmmmm. George? Jim? Ulrich? Over to you!!!!

Bests.....Rob :? :o :)

I've just looked on Ebay. There are two Mono pressings for sale both showing 1965 as a release date.

Hi Paul, hi Rob,
I have just checked my copies of "Shadow Music". All issues on the black-blue Columbia label - the two mono ones with the different versions of 'Benno-San' and the stereo one - have 1965 as publishing year. The stereo re-issues on the black-white EMI/Columbia and on the beige-brown Columbia label show 1966.
As Rob pointed out already, EMI had a stock of pre-printed labels with the logo and the rim, but to my knowledge without the date. I think that a misprint has happened, but have no proof.
Best wishes,
Ulrich

I can't comment on this all my LP's are long gone BUT, I was looking at Play.com and saw this listing:

Guitar Dream: Chitarra per sognare, Vol. 5 (Hit the Shadows, Santo & Johnny, Hawaiian Steel Guitar, Rock 'n Roll, Pop Music)
Artist: Fabbri Brothers

The album cover states that the Artist(s) is (are) Fabbri Brothers, but if you listen to the track excerpts they sound 100% Shadows to me.

There is no possibility that "Shadow Music" was issued in 1965.

The recording of Stay Around (one of the four vocal tracks on the album) was not completed until 7th January 1966.

I have to say that it is a surprise to me that the rest of the tracks had all been completed by 30th December 1965 (that must have been a marathon of a Shadows session, with seven tracks recorded, including two versions of Benno-San), since the LP sounds so far musically ahead of "The Sound Of The Shadows". The last recording for that previous album had taken place in late April 1965, so "Shadow Music" was squeezed into that seven month period.

Anther factoid from the period... Trying To Forget The One You Love was recorded 17th November 1965 (the same day as I Only Want To Be With You and the first draft of Leave My Woman Alone), but not released until early 1968.

There are two different versions of Benno San but I have always assumed only one was recorded.

I thought the mono version was simply the stereo version in mono but with the first 4 bars of the drums (and rice) solo takne from one side of the stereo only, the second 4 bars t'other side, and the last 4 bars both together.

The Pocket Guide to Shadow Music lists all the album's tracks as being recorded in 1965. Of course, it wasn't released until May 1966.
