Our hobby in our photographs

Postby abstamaria » 27 Jul 2012, 11:20

Noting the interest of some of our members in photography, let me take the liberty of starting a thread in which we may post photographs taken by our members of subjects related to our interest - The Shadows.

I am not thinking of snapshots, but of good quality photographs in both technical and aesthetic respects. I am inspired by the wonderful photos posted by a Shadows fan in another forum and hope to direct his and other photographers toward a subject dear to us. In this way, we would marry two hobbies – the Shadows and photography. I am sure the non-photographers among us will enjoy the photos also. I would, for one.

I think appropriate subjects will be The Shadows (for instance, a photo of Hank taken by us - see Al's good photos of a concert), their music, their and our guitars and gear, our bands, and all other matters related to our interest in the Shadows.

We might post photographs taken by others, provided they relate to us personally. I think photos downloaded from the Web would not be in keeping with the thread.

In keeping with the theme, it will be interesting to note the camera and lens used for each photo, if known, as they do in photography magazines.

I hope this is a good idea and of interest to others.

To start off, let me post the photo below to illustrate one subject and type of photograph I had in mind. Certainly, the more artistic among our members will have better ideas.

The photo is of our drummer Lito Toribio, who is about 70 now. He was drummer of a Shadows-style band in the early 60s and is generally acknowledged the best from the era. He makes the drums sing. I think the photo captures his love for the instrument and how involved with it he is when he plays. Photo by Bien Bautista, Manila, 2008. Canon Camera and lens.

"Hank Marvin" Stratocaster and PBass

Postby abstamaria » 28 Jul 2012, 14:38

Here is a studio shot of matching “Hank Marvin” guitars – my Stratocaster and Anna’s Precision Bass. Fiesta Red, white pickguards, gold hardware, and maple necks.

Good photos, Graham! And from a budget camera (those are pretty clear close-ups)? Great.

I've never seen a Burns, as only one reached these shores in the 60s and it has disappeared. Thanks for postings.

A photograph of a Shadows cover bassist.

Let me try to keep the momentum, while more of our member-photographers here are hopefully taking photos to post, so here’s one from my archives, taken over two years ago and already seen by some of you before. This is our bass guitarist Anna, who is a member of this forum, with her "Hank Marvin" Precision Bass, seen in detail in the photo above. It was brand new at the time, and one concern was that the sequins on her dress woud scratch the back of the guitar!

We tried to look "period" for the shows, so the girls had the appropriate hair-dos and we guitarists used the thin leather guitar straps of the early 60s. The dresses were supposed to seem from the era, with hemlines below the knees, but they arrived for the photo shoot and the shows too late for alteration, so had to be used looking post-era.

I like the photo, because Anna is naturally exuberant and truly enjoys playing, and the photo almost captures that spirit. I refer to it as the "Fiesta Red photo"!

Nice photo.
Who'd have thought that a red background, behind red bass and dress would work.
Does though. :)

How they do it in a studio,

Postby abstamaria » 31 Jul 2012, 05:58

Yes, Graham, I wasn’t sure red on red would work, but the photographer was right. Here’s how he did it.

Here, Anna and the rest of the chorus sing “Mr. Sandman” to get into the mood of the shot. Photo by me, using a point-and-shoot Canon, while the real photographer was working. That's our rhythm guitarist Roy, playing a Gibson J200.

Best,

Andy I think it's time for wheeling out Photoshop and see what is possible.
