TONIGHT. RADIO 2. 10 o'clock

Postby drakula63 » 03 Sep 2012, 15:32

Don't forget folks, "OUT OF THE SHADOWS", tonight on Radio 2 at 10 o'clock.

The first documentary on The Shadows in I don't know how many years! Whether it's good bad or indifferent, it has to be worth listening to, right? The blurb promises 'newly sourced interviews' with Hank, Bruce, Brian, 'Licorice' and Alan Hawkshaw.

Anyway; I for one know what I shall be doing at the appointed hour tonight. And it won't be watching 'News at Ten'...

I do.

It was the "Me And My Shadows" documentary ; Radio 2 February 1998.

ENJOYED IT!
Hearing from the surviving key players (Especially The Guv'nor!) was Great ............I know someone, still active playing Shads-influenced guitar, who started-out with a Hofner Congress, too. ;)
(Picky mode "On") Would have been nice to have included Alan Jones too, though, as would a "Part Two" to deal with MWF and the later stuff in more detail.
Altogether a well though-out and put-together production.............Thankyou "Auntie" for giving it airtime.
Regards
Paul

I can only echo the opinions expressed above. It was good, but could have been so much better had it been a two parter and on TV. The story from 1968 to the present day was squeezed into the last 10 minutes or so, almost as if those years do not count. It would have nice to hear some of the later material, it would have shown that there was so much more to the band's repertoire than the usual "Apache" etc still at least we heard "Scotch On The Socks" for a change.
Interesting to hear litle snippets of interviews with band members, but as usual no interview with John Rostill, was he ever interviewed ?

Totally disappointed. No goose bumps or wet eye like with Radio 4's TheThing About Hank.

Only Jeff Beck found to give a not entirely glowing tribute - and he was only on the phone.

No mention to speak of of the considerable solo achievements of all of them.

Last 40 years done seemingly in 3 minutes - first ten in 40.

Rhythm and Greens - why? - their biggest mistake.

No real story of the 20 Golden Greats phenomenon followed by major chart hits again.

And no mention of the worldwide bedroom players, Shadowmania etc.

Etc Etc

What a shame.

Yes, he was or kind of. I have a recording of an interview from mid-1967 for Australian radio or television. The questions were asked to the whole group and all four, Hank, Bruce, Brian and John gave answers to them.

Hi

I, too, agree with all the comments about the balance of the programme - too much concentration on the early years, leaving only about 10 minutes to cover all that happened after 1968. Yes, it would have been much better done as a two parter.

And I'm a bit weary of hearing yet again the story of how Hank acquired 34346 but I suppose it had to be included. A mention of the Burns guitars would have been good, though.

Still, I enjoyed it and we should be grateful for any programme about our heroes.

Cheers.
