Nice tune but i wonder if the date is wrong as the Shadows didn't really exist in 1969. Is it possibly 1968?

Hank had long been a Django fan. Also of Barney Kessel and Chet Atkins.

OK, OK Jim....it was also a 'back to the future' occasion for Hank to 1956/7 when he was a duffle coat- wearing guitar and banjo playing skiffler and jazzer called Brian Rankine..

We can call a truce now, or I can keep this up as long as you! ;)

I don't think there's any mystery.

Hank's musical roots - he's said so many times - were in jazz and blues, and his instruments were initially piano and banjo. His duffle coat period would have been recognised by the Ban the Bomb generation (I've always been partial to duffle coats myself, and still have one).

But Hank's career took over in the late fifties and travelled in a divergent direction. For those of us whose musical preferences first centred on The Shadows sound (and there are hundreds of thousands of us all over the world), it's our loss. But Hank's gain! ;)

Best wishes,

JN

This is from the TV special "Cliff At The Movies", transmitted on the 21st of September, 1968 and probably recorded earlier in the year.

Ahh Jim the good old Duffel Coat we sure all had one and it kept us cosy and warm even if
a bit untrendy!!!
Today they should be standard issue to all these silly Xmas night party goers who stagger about
the streets drunk and incapable and risk hypothemia in the wee small hours !!!
Oh yes and a free hot Bovril when they leave the nightclub too!!

I keep my duffle coat in the boot of the car, Mike.

You never know when you'll need it.
