"Bombora" , flipside "Greensleeves", was a huge international hit for The Atlantics. Reached top positions in the best selling record charts of several European countries, even in Finland. It was one of the first singles that I bought in my youth 1963. Still own it, label CBS 1.288, Made In Holland (!).

When I clicked the submit button yesterday and posted my tongue in cheek comment, I had a feeling I could get a sneer from the "long toes, short fusses brigade"...
Regarding this again in my opinion nothing extraordinarily video clip....I was only revering to this clip and nothing more ...the Atlantics legacy was not in my view at that time. Just the appearance as such came to me as a show of....
I don't need a spoon to eat some humble pie and I'm not ducking for cover, because I gave a my opinion as a tongue in cheek remark.
Apparently some on this site "can get away with murder" writing and naming between the lines The Shads are liars , because these writers hear and think it was all differently, then the shads have stated along the years....(and that's ok on it's own!) Because everybody is entitled to give his opinion here(how wrong or far from the truth it may be).
Some others can't give a honest opinion because they get cornered by a few who not share his view.

I give a sample....

More then a few members here wrote about Hanks last album....in there opinion it wasn't a splendid one...in all kinds of grades from "not his best" to plain "it is a kind of cr%p ".....
Never ever I've seen reactions like , "Do you know this man played Apache" or "he was a member of The Shadows" how dare you, writing in that way....
"Mr you need your tin hat" .....

Come on guys it's all in good fun, nothing more nothing less... ;)

If get slaughter again on this posting, I'll know how I have to grade this...

Still my tin hat in place ;)

Cheers Rob :ugeek:

Mr.Aartsen if this is your idea of "tongue in cheek" I really do feel you have a major problem understanding the English language.

Your intent to be funny is an insult to all people who follow fine musicians playing the music that we appreciate.

We would not be members of The Community if we did not enjoy instrumentals.

I suggest you take your tin hat and retire to your bunker permanently.

You really need to think about your future involvement if you are going to continue in your usual manner utilising sarcasm as your medium of expression.

That's all I have to say.

Ian, why such a strong language ? :o
English isn't my first language indeed! But who bother...how's your Dutch btw ;)
Life is to short for this over the top reaction :( on a harmless music threat about a nice display of vintage guitars and a good strong tune.
I know people who tell me, Hank is in there eyes a amateur string plonker, because there hero is such and so better.....not one nanosecond I would react in such mater as strong as you did.
I'm a valid member of a lot of shadsites (even before this site exist), going back to the last century....and reactions like you wrote in this thread are seldom seen.
Wishing people to get stuck in a (non existing) bunker, writhing about me that I'm insulting all instrumental lovers because I have a other opinion.....writhing about insulting people.....well in that regard I can learn a thing or two from you I reckon...
Nice to see your so strong in your believe you write for all other instrumental music lovers , hopefully they are fine with this statement, you speak/write for them all....

Re-reading all back, just two words seems to light your (short) fuse.....bozo and mediocre .....so if I had wrote.... artist and nice player... I would be one of the good guys.
Specially for the folks who are not familiar with my crippled English language, bozo was mend as geezer/bloke and mediocre was mend as not in the same league as Hank..... IMHO (my bad I have one)

Going "ballistic" to a fellow member in a way you did, only because he has a different opinion as yourself and some others, speaks more about your character, then about mine, so I leave it by this.
Thanks to other opinions , mankind have grown , If the bloke/bozo (oooops) who invented the wheel....didn't had a other opinion as the folks who carried everything on there back.....we all still carried more then we like.....

Ian, you can write "till you see blue in the face", I bow out of this discussion because I've more to do ;)

Cheers Rob

I think all points of view have been expressed here. Can we now move on?

I had never heard the name Martin Cilia before I listened to the two tunes. He is an excellent guitarist. I particularly liked Cry For A Shadow because the thin metallic sound resembles that of The Spotnicks, a band that I like a lot. Martin Cilia has innate musical ability: every tune he plays serves a purpose, is not merely musical noise, and he deliberately plays slightly off-beat occasionally for greater effect on Cry For A Shadow. I didn't like everything about Telstar, though.

I don't see much point in taking offence at anyone's remarks concerning a musician's talent. Freedom of speech is a good thing and we can all judge a person's musicality from his comments.

I'll have to search the web for Martin Cilia's records!

Clearly, we are not able to leave this alone, so the thread is now locked.
