Gary, this is the BURNSsound of my ARTRIO SHADOWS in 2014. Not miked up. My Marvin ( JMI amp ) was very powerful and we muted the microphone on the lead. Only vocals, keys and drums ( OH and BD ) came out of a very small PA ! The video & sound cames from a SONY camcorder which was in front of the stage with one stereomic !

Hi Hans, In a live situation, the Burns does sound closer than a strat for tunes like Atlantis,Ive always thought so anyway,but.......Apart from Hank saying it was a strat, All of The Shadows had a different sound from 1962 onwards. They didnt sound like that for the 3 years previously so my guess is (apart from production line ac30s) the studio compressor/techniques changed all this. Anyway its all friendly banter. regards Gary

Played on a strat, and with the use of a tremelo arm ! cant believe anyone would think not, and with the greatest of respect the you tube clip only serves to prove this,
Phil.

Interesting that Hank says Theme For Young Lovers was recorded in Blackpool during Summer 1963. The EMI studio logs show it as 1st November, with Bruce absent ill. I wonder whether they recorded an earlier version in Blackpool? If they did, I would expect it to be in mono only and with Bruce playing rhythm.

I cannot say what happened in the studio but I have seen Hank play Atlantis live several times from sitting in the front row right in front of him and noticed that he switched from the bridge pickup to the neck pickup several times.

The intro and middle were played with neck pick up, the outro was neck and then a switch mid way to bridge pick up.
In later years Hank just used the bridge for the whole thing as the tone changes seem to have been done at the main mixer desk!

On the version that I listened to on the headphones, the mix was very different to the 7" single.
It really sounds like the intro, middle intro and outro were from a different 'take' at a different time to the verse part, as though those sections had been left from a previous 'take' and somebody gave him a different sounding guitar with a different set of parameters on the desk. Not to say that it isn't a Strat, but the difference is big. I have had each of those sounds from a Strat, but to do it mid-tune quickly back then would have been difficult in one take. Not so these days with our multi effects pedals . That's why I think it's a different track, but then I doubt myself as I didn't think they had multitrack in 1962 at EMI. Someone may be able to tell me otherwise. :)

The TVS boys version as played by Paul in the 'Sound Files' section is so close to the original that it would be interesting to know how they recorded it.

Spike, Paul, Gary?

We know it was played on a Strat - it's just interesting to some of us to know how the sound was created!
