Why does this sort of thread keep coming up?

Does it really matter who is or isn't legally/technically/morally etc a Shadow? Can't we just enjoy the music and be thankful for the opportunity to see some great musicians at work

I'm surprised at this one, Dave. By my understanding, Alan couldn't have left the Shadows because he wasn't in them in the first place. He was a session musician, pure and simple. He would accept Shadows gigs when they were offered but, like any freelance, he was filling his diary on a first come/first served basis. Time was offered at a time when he was free and in a position to accept it. As a result, being an honourable chap, he felt he had to decline the next Shadows offer when it came. He did work with them again subsequently, though.

If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Cheers - Iain

And we should not forget, three bassplayers of former line ups are still alive.
M.G. is a great musician, but for me he is NOT a "Shadow", he is a session musician.
I do not talk about the quality of a musician - 50 Years Cliff & Shadows without
the original bassplayer - I would have presented all the still living bassplayers because
of the genuineness and history of the Shadows. It`s a fact, that B.Locking, J. Harris,
( A. Jones) were members of the Shadows. It seems that Cliff, Hank , Brian and
Bruce had forgotten that it all started with Apache and the bassplayer on the record
I think was Jet.

You may find this interesting you may not but it's fact not fiction...........Away from these boards I have been told that only Hank And Bruce are now The Shadows, Brian Bennett has been on wages and played with The Shadows.............I've asked Jet Harris who are The Shadows his answer " Hank , Bruce myself (Jet) and Tony"....................So it seems the rest of the players just played with them.............Unless you know different !

Hi all Derek could well be right wikipedia has a listing which states the shadows partnership members. If it's right it shows Brian to be a partner 1977 to 1990, it also shows Brian to be a none/ partnership member 1961 to 1976 hope this helps!

I always understood that the Full members of The Shadows were the original 4i.e.Jet and Tony until they left the band. Then Brian Bennett became a full member in 1977. Therefore when the final tour was announced in 2003 it was Hank Bruce and Brian.

Waffels has every right to be angry.
[b]What constitutes a session musician:

A session musician, by definition is one who is hired for a session. This could be as an additional sound, or as a replacement for a missing member. This can be for a single recording, a recording session or individual performance.

Beyond this, say for an extended tour, or series of records or recordings. They become a bonafied member of that group or band for that period of time for which they have been engaged.

So over time. Alan, Cliff, Mark and Warren have all been or are "Shadows". Times change, band members change.

Individual opinions as to who should be included should be just that, your individual opinion. it is not necessary to share it with others, nor debate it.

It should also be remembered that these individuals, are friends not just band members. No one has the right to say who your friends should be, think about it.

This band, regardless of who were members at the time. Have produced some of the best instrumental music of all time, they have brought people together through their shared love of music, and their distinctive sound that so many of us try to emulate.

So lets just say, Thankyou. To all the members of the Shadows through the years, that have given us such wonderful music to enjoy.

If you read this Warren. Many thanks, to all of you.
