The main thing about Pipeline has always been the incredible range of instrumental music provided by numerous talented and enthusiastic bands. Plus....a very relaxed & happy atmosphere with the opportunity to mingle with like - minded fans, collectors and players. It is fantastic.
Now....right from the outset - 'Big Al' (Alan Taylor) always had a tendency to appear in extremely 'loud' and garish Hawaiian shirts. It became part of the tradition. Many have tried to match him......but...he has a certain 'je ne sais quoi' - shall we say. Likewise George Geddes' astonishing choice in flamboyant tasteless ties. Very brash and vulgar - in stark contrast to their erudite and tasteful wearer. The 'competition' in the early years was simply for George himself to find something even more outrageous the following year. Thus (& this is purely my own understanding / interpretation) - there has never been any formal competition as such. No, it's just that many 'Pipeliners' have been inspired (!!??) by George to sport ever more ghastly ties themselves. Some people have come close down the years - but George remains the undisputed 'King' of the nausea inducing tie. But, as you've read - he welcomes those who share his (appalling) tastes in this regard. Bring your dark glasses along for safety's sake.
