I would just like to say that I am Derek Chester. The son of Peter Chester and the grandson of Charlie Chester. Most of what has been written is eventually correct. He was a guard on the trains and he did run a bag stall at the market. His main reason for not continuing with music was that he has MS and so he could not continue to drum. He now lives down south and spends much of his time relaxing in the sun over the winter months.
He has in the last few weeks finally bought a tablet and can now go on line. Hopefully I can get him to go onto the Internet and see what is out there.
Any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Hi Derek

I'm sure Peter would be a very welcome member of this site and would have many a fascinating story to share.
By the way, like many of the members here, I'm old enough to remember your grandfather and although it's a cliche, they really don't make them like that anymore.

Dear Derek: Welcome to the ShadowMusic site. I would just like to second the motion made by Mikey. You and your father would be very welcome and warmly received if you would like to take part in any discussions. There are members from all over the world here, and we would love to get to know you and your father better.

Kind regards,
Donna

"With a box full of records, and a bag full of post,
It's Radio Soapbox - and Charlie, your host!"

I well remember listening to Charlie's show on Radio 2 as a teenager in the 70s.

It was only last night though, when I looked him up on Wikipedia, that I found out the theme tune to his show was called 'Music To Drive By.'

(I don't think it refers to shootings.)

It was played by the Joe Loss Orchestra I believe.

Composed by Alan Moorhouse, Joe Loss issued a commercial recording, credited as the Loss Concertium, but the Charlie Chester radio version was a KPM publishers library recording attributed to the Oscar Brandenburg Orchestra, and originally associated with the 1960s ITV consumer affairs series On The Braden Beat.
