Hi Donna
That's very interesting as I've often heard cover versions played with the repeated notes at the beginning and thought it was just the performers' own interpretations but they've obviously copied that version you mention.
Best wishes

JimN wrote:Just to add to what others have said, the "correct" intro to TFYL contains just five notes (D-C#-B-C#-B), played on lead guitar alone (the rest of the band come in on a B minor chord on the lead guitarist's second B note).

When the 1990 EMI compilation "The Original Chart Hits 1960-1980" was released, the CD version (and only the CD version) contained a digital glitch which caused a fast reiteration of the initial D note. The vinyl version (I have it) did not have that fault and neither did the cassette version. It was an odd mastering error, because the tune had already been re-mastered once previously, for release on the first CD version of the "More Hits!" LP. However, the 1990 CDx2 / LPx2 / MCx2 set did proudly bear the instription that it had been remastered on the Sonic Solutions "No-Noise" system, so a new re-master was a selling point.

Ever since, some other (but not all) EMI-based compilations have featured the same error, presumably having extracted the audio from a copy of the 1990 CD (and certain other companies have replicated other mastering curiosities and peculiarities by the same method).

My database shows the EMI version of Theme For Young Lovers thus:

I always understood, the glitch with the repeating note at the start first appeared on the 1991 6 CD box "The Early Years 1959-1966". I think the only 'mistake' of "Theme For Young Lovers" on the 1990 2 CD set "The Original Chart Hits 1960-1980" is that it has its stereo image reversed.

Oh dear. I have been starting that with two D notes.

Thanks for raising the point, Donna.

All the more praiseworthy when you remember that Bruce wrote it on his own.

(Then didn't even get to play on the record!)

Yes it wasn't until 1989 that Bruce got to play it on the At Their Very Best album

For a bit of variation I sometimes play three D notes in quick succession, i.e. da-da dah (D D D C# B C# B), when repeating the riff before beginning the last verse.

Certainly, the version on "The Original Chart Hits 1960-1980" is glitch-free. However, it does crop up on the 3CD set "The First 20 Years At The Top: 75 Originals 1959-1979" (EMI 8321672) (1995) and the 2CD set "The Platinum Collection" (EMI 3349382) (2005)
