I nteresting! Joe Brown told me many yeas ago that he gave / sold the echo box to Hank! Oh well....maybe just a demonstration / loan? I do recall that Joe himself said that he didn't want to carry on using it.

I've always had reservations about the story of Joe just giving the echo unit to Hank.

As generous as Joe might wish to be to a friend, those units then cost well over £100.00 - a small fortune in 1959 and probably worth about £2,000.00 (or more) in today's terms. And none of them were all that well off at the time. Bruce's first big royalty cheque (as a songwriter) didn't buy him a flash sports car - it got him a motor scooter.

"Giving", it seems to me, must have involved some financial deal between Joe (or his management) and the management of The Shadows or of Cliff. This was probably before Peter Gormley came onto the scene.

I remember I read somewhere that Hank only tried Joe's echo unit which was lended to him for a few days, and then asked JMI to supply one for him.

Did he say he bought it ? I thought he asked JMI (Vox) to lend him one, as it was done for amps...

Jim, Pierre, Didier,
Thank you all. Your comments / thoughts all make perfect sense. I would now assume that when Joe Brown said that he 'gave' the echo unit to Hank - what he probably meant was that he 'gave' it to him to try out for a short while & then (as Jim suggests) maybe a private agreement between Hank & Joe for Hank to buy it off Joe (reasonable terms??) if he liked it. The idea that (obviously) Hank did like it....but might be able to get one (as mentioned) for free is certainly plausible. Of course - Hank is now thinking back over 50 years. When I interviewed Joe Brown it was 30 years after the event...but, of course, he may have also only half remembered what happened at the time.

Bests.....Rob :D

Surely before Apache Hank was in no position to be scrounging stuff from JMI ?

He says this in the mag: "But I thought it was fantastic, so I contacted Vox, who were importing them, and got one - that was the beginning of it really."
