Yes....the thing is....the tickets were numbered as per table / seat (although no actual numbers on the seats). For example - mine was table 13, seat 6. Now....allowing for the fact that (as Alan McKillop states) one would have expected the same numbering system as Shadowmania - there was someone else sitting in 'my seat'. However, I personally didn't make a fuss about it...although I would have preferred (as George mentioned) to have actually sat next to the people I booked the tickets with...it was slightly annoying but not a huge deal. However, David Hawley had also booked the same table in our 'little group'. In the event (for various reasons) he decided to sit with Pat Terrett & the Crickettes. Now, if we are going to be 'picky'.....someone else was sitting in Dave's allocated seat (which he hadn't taken up). However - he did briefly come over at one point for a chat. He sat in his 'allocated' seat (which had been temporarily vacated by the occupant). I do not know who the other person was but he got rather 'shirty' - returning to find Dave H in 'his' seat! He was still not happy when Dave politely informed him that he had a seat booked on that table and the ticket to prove it - but that he wasn't going to take up the seat as it turned out. Ah well....it all seems rather petty doesn't it? But...as someone else had raised the subject...
Taking this to an illogical conclusion. I travelled up & back by train. I booked well in advance and I paid extra (because it wasn't hideously expensive) for a 1st Class upgrade between Birmingham and Reading. Boy, was I glad I did...because the 5 coach train (Newcastle - Bournemouth) was already pretty full when about 200 people tried to board it at Birmingham. So....I was not best pleased to find someone sitting in my pre - booked, pre - paid, allocated seat. However, as you know, I am pretty easy - going and fairly polite. I produced my ticket and (politely) asked the person sitting there if they wouldn't mind moving as I had booked the seat between Birmingham and Reading. He basically said 'No' - because there was no - one sitting there when the train started at Newcastle. I politely explained that was irrelevant, as my booking was clearly from Birmingham to Reading & that he would have to vacate the seat. He din't actually tell me to "**** off" - but was rather surly and aggressive & said he was staying put. Well, I wasn't going to stand all the way from Birmingham to Reading after I'd booked in advance & with an Upgrade. So....I went to find the train manager & my unco - operative fellow passenger was obliged to move. If looks could kill.......but I didn't care.....I had booked the ticket & I was entitled to the seat. Thus...I would simply assume that if someone had Table 13, seat 01 or 02 (or whatever) at Shadowsfix - wouldn't they simply & reasonably think that they should be sitting at that particular end of the table - with the people (friends) that they had booked 'en bloc' with? Nothing to do with 'God given right' at all.........
