8-) Hey Rob...do you by chance have the 4-cd box of Cliff Richard "The Rock and Roll Years" ? It's loaded with BD's and FS's..
But fortunately there are the final takes as we know them on the albums as well..

Hi Rob, will see what I can do, but it could take some time... will try (why didn't you come up with this last week ;-))

Hi Angel,
Yes....last week would have been better!!LOL. It only came up the other day because the famous photograph was posted once again and people began to ask questions - which set me thinking.....sorry! Anything that you can find out would be of great interest. Many thanks in hopeful anticipation.

Best wishes,

AlanMcKillop wrote:The mystery deepens, two of the articles refer to Cliff 'sitting in' on acoustic, so once again we have to decide whether it was factual or a publicity stunt. It could have been information fed to the press on the back of the photo which the record company knew was going to appear on the sheet music for QS or it was a sales pitch by naming Cliff (who already had achieved success) as a participant to boost sales. I don't know what to think. :?

Well I do!

There's no acoustic guitar on Quatermasster's Stores and Bruce is playing it on Apache.

It's just the press getting it wrong.

Didn't the Shads say that they didn't like QS as it made them sound like Johnny & The Hurricanes? It was similar tune to their then recent hit Red River Rock after all...lucky that Apache got the radio plays as the A side, or we wouldn't be here discussing this!

Bruce had a lot of folk confused for years- as we assumed from photos on album covers etc that on Apache and other tunes, he was somehow getting that acoustic sound (which was Cliff's Gibson J200 miked direct to the recording board) from an electric guitar- Jazzmaster or Telecaster...until some years ago, he divulged that it WAS an acoustic....although these days Bruce gets a near-acoustic sound from his Strat.

Speaking of which - try this:

Set Strat (or copy in my case)on middle pickup, guitar tone control for middle pickup on 10 (full treble)
Set clean tone from amp-not too much bass or middle but a reasonable amount of treble.
Turn the amp up louder than you might normally use for playing rhythm, then set guitar volume quite low- say about 3-4.

Gives me a pretty good facsimile of Bruce's live sound!

Geeez!! So much information... and I thought I knew most of what there was to know about the Shadows, but the fact is, the more I know, the more I realize that I know very little!!

For example, I had no idea that Jerry Lordan was a singer. I also did not know that Jet was the leader of the Shadows.

Hank and Bruce were with Cliff before Jet joined them, however Jet being that little bit older, meant that he was able to sign some of the legal papers/documents and as such was referred to as the leader.

Alan's absolutely right. Jet was 21 just as "Apache" hit it big and, as Alan says, therefore (in the eyes of the law) able to sign contracts on their behalf. Plus, Hank & Bruce did look up to Jet in the early days as he'd played with Tony Crombie & His Rockets and he had a bit of a Jazz background having had bass lessons from Ted Heath Band bass supremo Sammy Stokes. In his autobiography Bruce recalled how ironic it was that, having been involved with and briefly appearing in "Serious Charge" - none of the Shadows were legally allowed to go and see it in British Cinemas of the day because they were still legally juveniles and the film's censor rating meant that it was unsuitable viewing for them!
