the guitar setup issues is the main issue, i remember the pic of 34346 not too long after it was purchased with bits of cigarette paper in the nut to stop the strings rattling (Colin Pryce Jones now does this for authenticity)

A Strat fitted with a Bigsby would probably be a foolproof option.........It would look really good as well.

Cliff Richard used to have one - a blonde pre-CBS fifties maple-neck hard-tail model, with a replacement scratchplate covering the bridge aperture, a Tune-O-Matic type bridge and the horseshoe-shape Bigsby converting it to a Strat model.

This was in the days before the Vintage reissue ranges, so it probably made sense for someone to fit it.

I thought the original question was about why the change was made from Strat to Burns.

When I saw the Shadows at the Paris Olympia in 1964, I was very surprised to see they had new guitars of a model I had never seen before.
I was close enough from the stage to read "Burns London" on them. As there was a "buy british" campain in the UK at this time, I thought they had followed it !

Didn't Burns become Baldwin around 1968? I think they were taken over or something?

I think Baldwin took them over 1965 then it went to Ampeg a bit later. All in the Burns book . If you don't have it put it on your Xmas list!

Sorry to sound anally retentive, but in the interests of chronological completeness, I feel I should point out that the Ampeg chapter in Burns history occurred before Baldwin's buy-out in 1965.

The Shadows ' switch from Fender to Burns coincided with the Ventures' own switch to Mossrite. It was also the time when both groups (and guitar bands) fell from favor. The Beatles and company were the new thing.

Thereafter, very little material from the two bands managed to filter through to this island. That is why neither Burns nor Mossrites are known here. Hank played all the Shadows pieces known to me on a Stratocaster.
