A bit off-topic, but I've got an old vinyl album by Jet called 'Inside'- recorded live at a prison concert - like Johnny Cash!- maybe late 1970's?

Dear old Jet autographed it for me too!

Anyone else remember this LP?

A very 'honest' LP recorded live at Gloucester Prison in 1977. However - no - one told Jet or the band - it was recorded clandestinely. The first Jet knew about it was when it was actually released!! With only c.2,000 or so copies pressed it was a genuine rarity for many years. It has since been reissued on CD - but that's probably deleted now.

I think Jet was using a different type of guitar on that recording at that time wasn't he? It was a slimline archtop semi acoustic, like a Yamaha, Aria or Ibanez, sort of 335 Gibson style thing with a BIgsby vibrato?

Anyway, he still sounded like JET!

I think the cheap semi (and it was a very cheap thing) was just used for a photo shoot. I saw Jet & The Diamonds live in the summer of 1977 at the Wookey Hollow in Liverpool (first time I ever saw or met Jet). Jet was using a typical 1970s sunburst Jazz Bass (block marker model) and for guitar numbers (eg, Shazam!, Diamonds, Apache), he swapped to the equally typical seventies sunburst Strat (bullet neck) otherwise being played by lead guitarist Laurel Jones.

Jim could have been the 'Memory Man' in 'The 39 Steps' I reckon! Spot on as ever. Jet did use a Tokai guitar during the late '80s / early '90s before reverting to a Fender Strat again and then the series of guitars well documented since his proper 'comeback' in 1999. For bass work apart from a spell when he was sponsored by Barry Gibson) he's always used a Fender. The tracks on "Inside" were as follows: The Stranger / Blue Moon - Perfidia / Sleepwalk / Dance On / Wonderful Land / FBI / Spanish Harlem / Apache / Riders In The Sky / Nivram / Diamonds / Scarlett O'Hara / Shazam (recorded live in the chapel of Gloucester Prison on April 3rd 1977). My CD is on the German branch of Castle Communications (CNC 4022 - 2) dating from 1994. I'm sure that there was a separate (possibly semi - legal) CD issue at some point.

The Tokai can be seen on the sleeve of Jet's Anniversary CD, if my memory serves me right...

George

PS: Memory Man? Yes, I can just see Jim on stage at Shadowmania, answering questions. Then the lights go out and.... [Sorry, got carried away there!]

Hi Rob

Could you give us some background to Theme For A Fallen Idol from the Anniversary album? Roger LaVern, the listed composer, is known for his keyboard skills. Was the number written for Jet, or was it adapted for six-string bass?

Hi Ray,
I do know that Roger LaVern decided to rescue Jet from obscurity and attempt (as others had tried and failed to do) to revive his career. This was sometime during 1974. Roger then effectively became both Jet's MD and manager. As the former he set up a recording session for Jet at SRT - paying for the studio and the other musicians himself. In 1975 Jet cut three titles at the session "Theme For A Fallen Idol" (later re - titled as simply "Theme"), " The Guitar Man" (both instrumentals) and the vocal "This Sportin' Life". "Theme..." was indeed written especially for Jet whilst "The Guitar Man" was a Harris / LaVern collaboration. Jet has re - recorded "Theme..." a couple of times showing that it is a fine track. The SRT tracks are woefully represented on CD - I don't believe that any of them have ever been officially reissued.

Bests....Rob :)
