I guess "What we've got here is failure to communicate" (spoken in an american accent)

The problem we have here is that there is a lack of sense of humour, if one can't take it back then he ought not to dish it out. The PC brigade are there again, always ready to be offended for someone else, instead of butting out and letting people get on with it. It seems it's OK to have an innuendo directed one way, but not allowed to be replied to. You're right about communication humdrum, to some it's non existent.

You can't have it both ways, Dave.

You know my feelings on censorship - I'm agin it!

However, calling someone a 'retard' (either directly or by implication) goes against the grain and would ordinarily result in a lockdown.

So you are saying that it's the behaviour of a normal sane person, to wish ill fate on someone - fair enough I know where you stand then. :?

I would never dream of picking up anything in someones living room that was not mine- just bad manners, however certain countries in the west do seem to have a throw away culture, especially the kids we see portrayed in Hollywood films where possessions are just thrown about- obviously these people have so much money it doesn't matter.
Professional equipment comes in for a lot of stick as obviously it gets handled by quite a few people and once something gets a bit of damage it tends to be less well looked after until you end up with something that looks like it was in a room where a grenade exploded. I sometimes think 'roadies' go to a special training school where they are taught to throw things about (like they were a baddie in a Clint Eastwood movie) after all its a bit cissie to place things carefully down- all professionals toss their tools onto the ground...
I never leave anything lying about I don't want touched or fiddled with especially if there are kids about.

No you are not being unreasonable Humdrum. Guitars and other equipment cost a lot of hard earned money with all of it being overpriced.
I would never touch anyone else's guitar without asking first and even then I wouldn't ask someone I didn't know very well.
I have been called miserable out on gigs because I don't like anyone touching my gear. A lot of people are not careful enough and a lot of the time are drunk so they don't know what they are doing. If you mention about what it costs they sometimes say, 'Why do 'YOU' wan't to pay that much for a guitar? it's only a piece of wood to hold the strings on.'
Obviously they are ignorant with no knowledge of guitars or equipment.
Now that I've retired from gigging I keep my guitars upstairs in their cases to be on the safe side. I don't mind other musicians that I know touching or playing them but I wouldn't even let them borrow them outside the house.
Visiting children can be a problem as giving them a clip around the ear and made to sit still is no longer done, (pity). :-D
Also puppies can chew things like pieces of wood and they don't know an expensive guitar from a piece of driftwood.
If you value your guitars keep them out of the way, some people who I've only recently known don't even know I've got them. :-)

This topic has taken a few odd turnings. We're not talking about throwing guitars around, just whether we are happy for other people to touch them. Big difference, methinks.

The reason I don't leave my guitar out

Postby abstamaria » 30 Jul 2014, 12:19

To put things in perspective, the original question was not about strangers opening one’s guitar case in clubs or roadies throwing guitars about. It was about guests – friends – in one’s living room.

Roy asked, “Do you let other people touch your guitars? I have my Stratocaster on a stand in my living room & when guests come around mostly all of them without fail head straight towards it with arms outstretched, & I have to say LEAVE IT! In a loud voice. This sometimes causes a great deal of sulky behaviour from them, mostly the blokes. I just don't like people touching my gear.......Am I being unreasonable?”

Roy, I do not know what the culture is where you live, but if your guests invariably reach for your guitar, wouldn’t it be simpler to put the guitar away when visitors are expected? That would avoid the aggravation and keep friends.

Here’s our bass guitarist Anna at my home with Sundance the Rottweiler. He's one good reason I would never leave a guitar on a stand in the living room.

Best regards,

Andy

This is getting repetitious but why should i HAVE to hide my guitar away.......Does that mean i also have to hide away my wide screen plasma t/v (if i had one) & all my other prized belongings?
