I cant see the Lakeside taking on this venture - they dont seem to have much going on these days int he way of entertainment - a few girly nights and the odd tribute band. The place actually looks a bit drab these days in need of rufurbishment - I noted several areas of worn carpet held together by gaffer tape and the seating isnt exactly comfortable either.

Attempting such a task would require a very experienced person to organise it as there are so many different areas to be considered.
Location would be paramount to attract the maximum numbers therefore it probably should central, Birmingham area is good for air, rail, parking.
There is already a wonderful weekend in Scarborough every year run by Ian and Linda Harper which deserves far greater support than it does now. It has live bands and backing tracks so all are catered for. Those who regularly attend this weekend and Ange and I are two really enjoy this event and will continue to support it.
However I am sure Ian and Linda will tell you that it ain't easy to organise. There is so much more than most people realise to organising and running such an event.
So before you get all hyped up think about it very carefully and perhaps have a word with the Harpers.

To be honest, I've always thought that the seating at Lakeside is orientated wrongly. The seats need to be left to right and not at right angles to the stage. It's a bugger getting by the line of occupants when you're jammed in the corner.

4. But I think it would be a shame if the UK could not have *some* kind of national event to celebrate the music of the Shadows on a regular basis.

I totally agree George - point 4 in particular - friends and I really look forward to it every year. It's been a great day out. I'd love something similar to continue for as long as possible. Always been happy with Lakeside, though I'd travel to wherever it could be.

re the seating. I was actually phoned by Lakeside when I dared mentioned on this site that I was disappointed with seat allocation and assured I had very good seats.

In reality I could only see head and shoulders of the two outside players in all groups, bass was completely obscured and I could just about see the drummers head.

We were, it's true to say, directly in line with the stage but the table in front of us was populated by some fairly large people who then invited a friend from somewhere else in the room to join them, his mission for the day was to keep standing up playing Air Guitar.

Oddly enough a friend of mine who'd been to a lot of the events, and (I believe)the Friday night parties as well, was allocated either the same table or one very close to it a couple of years back and was so disappointed hasn't been back since.

The event has always been good but in my view that has always been in spite of the venue not because of it, the seating is not good and the food takes me back to my days working in holiday camps in the 60's.

For all that if it was on again next year I'd still go.

I omitted that there is also an excellent weekend in Newcastle which again deserves support.
When there are already two great weekends available why do we need to have another. You lot in the south need to get your passports out and try the northern weekends.

Have never been to Scarborough, but have visited the Newcastle event for several years, and it is always enjoyable.

I don't see any conflict with either event if there was to be a more concert-orientated event in the autumn - Shadowmania-lite (but not using the mania name as DR has rightly pointed out...)
