I hope you don't mind being corrected Martin,
The solo on 'My Baby Left Me' was in fact Jimmy Page.
Big Jim Sullivan played the solo's on 'The Crying Game' & 'One Heart Between Two', using the DeArmond 610 pedal, which inspired HBM to buy one for himself to try. 8-)

Thanks for that Dave...I can't remember where I got the info that it was Big Jim; regardless though, a fabulous solo. Never been a huge Jimmy Page fan previously so may have to re-adjust my thinking now!

I too always thought that it was Big Jim Sullivan playing that solo on 'My Baby Left Me', it's his style and sound, but according to Berry himself it was Jimmy Page, but I have an underlying suspicion that that Berry may not really know, but believing that it would add more kudos to the track if it was Jimmy Page - hence that's why the story emerged. Berry was never around at the BBC when we were laying tracks down for him to 'voice over'. You may be right after all Martin.

I think it would be fair to say that Big Jim long enjoyed the admiration and esteem of his peers and many musicians of the succeeding generation, if perhaps not the wider public at large, and maybe that was his choice to follow a career out of the direct spotlight. Indeed, his legacy is immeasurable and will always serve as an example to follow in the future.

Even Ken Bruce paid tribute to Big Jim Sullivan on Radio 2 Wedensday morning saying that he played on many number one records. He then played The Tremolos`s Silence is Golden as one of the records that he had played on which suprised me as I thought that it would have been Ricky West who played on that

Big Jim's website says he played on it (a surprise to me too). Rick West would certainly have been capable of playing the guitar on that record. Perhaps it was recorded live to tape and the vocalists needed to concentrate on singing. Or perhaps the BT was recorded whilst the band were elsewhere (it happened).

The Tremeloes also provided studio backing for other people. I think I read once that they were the instrumental side of "Christie", who had a hit (sole hit) with that favourite for northern club cover bands, Yellow River.

Few years ago when I played in a covers band, we wanted to do that song - but we couldn't find anyone who'd own up to having the record!

I see that (Jeff) Christie also had another 1970 hit: San Bernardino (and I'd add the same description to that one as well).

Done them both in my time Jim!!

Jeff is a good old Leeds boy like myself and I knew him when he was in the Outer Limits.
