A few 1963 photos...

I was sorting through old sheet music this afternoon and came across some pages torn from some old ABC TV-related booklet connected with the programme "Thank Your Lucky Stars".

There's the back cover - a colour production still of Cliff and The Shadows at the studios, probably in June of 1963. Although Bruce is seen with Cliff's sunburst J-200, Hank is clearly seen with the white Stratocaster (with the tortoiseshell scratchplate) which the group were using at the time:

There's also a monochrome rehearsal shot (ie, from an inner page) which pictures Hank with Cliff in the foreground and where both Brian B and Licorice can be seen in the background.

And there's also a shot of The Shadows' own performance on that TYLS from June 1963, with them adopting a Spanish look for a mimed rendition of Granada from their then newly-released EP "Los Shadows":

All three were quite badly-damaged and I've had to make some electronic repairs, but then, I had thought I'd never find these scraps of paper again...

Love the 'Bruce Bennett' name in the last pic. ;)

Hmmm... I hadn't noticed that.

But exactly the same mistake was made in James Wynn's sleeve notes for the EP "Dance On With The Shadows". Wonder if he wrote the copy for this TYLS memorabilia?

Good to see pictures of the white Fenders, they don't come up very often. I remember the one of them on stools wearing hats and remember seeing it on TV but I can't remember what they were playing now or what show it was?

There's a clue or two in what is written above, Paul!

It was "Thank Your Lucky Stars" (ABC Television, from either the Aston or the Teddington studios), June 1963. The Shadows were miming to Granada (the only time I believe they were ever known to make a public reference to, or promotion of, any of the tracks from the "Los Shadows" EP).

The exact date can be found on the web under a Google search for "Thank Your Lucky Stars", via a site which lists the guests for more or less every TYLS programme from 1961 - 1966.

Strange how pictures or videos of the white Fenders are rarely shown because looking at the time periods (and I can remember such times) they had the white ones for nearly if not as long as the red ones before that.

There is a scene in Wonderful Life though with Hank and John playing them during Cliff's song Do You Remember.

I remember having a copy of a paperback directory of pop stars of the period (edited, I think, by a gentleman called Phil Buckle, and riddled with errors), which included this name credit caption, accompanying the illustration of the Shadows.

There was an American film star called Bruce Bennett - he was Tarzan for a while...

You do find pics. of the white Fenders from time, but very few with the Strats still having the white scratchplates.

Thanks for posting, Jim. I'm sure I had the TYLS book myself, but it probably disappeared in a house move after I got married!

I suspect that the TYLS photo with Cliff, Hank and Bruce is from the (pre-recorded) August 10, 1963 broadcast , and that the number is Your Eyes Tell On You -- which, coupled with It's All in the Game, was released as a Cliff double-A the following Friday.
