Scope for EMI CD set: 1967-1980..?

I very much enjoyed the expanded EMI Six CD set 'Complete studio recordings 1959-1966'
(tho' maybe they overlooked the rare alternate mono acoustic version of 'Genie With The Light Brown Lamp' ?)

It occurs to me there is plenty of scope for a follow up 1967-1980 EMI Years six CD set too ?

Opening with 'Maroc 7' & 'Bombay Duck' plus the other singles tracks ('Tomorrow's Cancelled' / 'Somewhere' etc) , the four overseas EP tracks (Japan) & the two instrumentals from 'Cinderella' ('Autumn' and 'The Flyder and The Spy') plus the two 1967 studio albums 'Jigsaw', 'From Hank, Bruce...' etc, the alternate version of 'Tennessee Waltz', and rarer tracks such as 'The Girl from Ipanema', 'I Can't Forget' & 'Running Out of World', - then on through The Shads seven tracks on the 'Established 1958' album in 1968....plus the later 1968 singles; 'Dear Old Mrs. Bell', 'Trying To Forget The One You Love' (both versions, more common stereo & the notably alternate rarer mono single version) and 'Slaughter on Tenth Avenue'....plus 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'.

also the best of Hank's 1969 solo instrumental tracks such as; 'Goodnight Dick', 'Wahine', 'Morning Star', 'Sacha', 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Boogatoo', 'Aquarius', 'The Big Country','Evening Comes', 'Love And Occasional Rain', 'Sunday For Seven Days' etc ( tracks in stereo where possible)

then on through the later EMI albums; 'Shades of Rock', 'Rockin With Curly Leads', 'Specs Appeal', 'Tasty' and 'String of Hits' - plus the rarer non album songs such as; 'Run Billy Run', 'It'll Be Me Babe', 'The Air That I Breathe', 'No No Nina' (instrumental version), 'Love is Falling in Love Again', 'We'll Believe in Loving', 'Love Deluxe', 'Sweet Saturday Night', 'Black is Black', 'Rusk', and the alternate single versions of; 'God Only Knows' (left unissued at the time) & finally 'Riders in The Sky'.

There would certainly be enough tracks by The Shadows plus some of Hank's solo instrumentals of that period

If CD playing time permitted maybe even both sides of John Rostill's 'Funny Old World' & Bruce Welch' 'Please Mr.Please' solo singles & a few of Hank's Guitar Syndicate tracks (say; 'Flamingo', 'Syndicated', 'Have You Never Been Mellow', etc) - all EMI Recordings - might also be included ?

Whatever there certainly IS plenty of EMI era Shadows material & some related tracks to comprise a Shadows 1967-1980 CD set from EMI - yes ?

I've left out the Marvin, Welch & Farrar' and Marvin/Farrar' vocal material as that is worth it's own compilations.

I think there is also scope for an 'Acoustic' Shadows compilation of about 24 tracks or so from the EMI years of vocals & instrumentals going from; 'Guitar Tango' & 'All My Sorrows' on through the sixties with other sixties tracks such as: 'The Bandit', 'All Day' (both stereo 'B' side & alt mono versions, spaced apart a bit !), 'Me Oh My', 'The Lute Number', 'Genie With The Light Brown Lamp' (rarer acoustic mono version), 'Five Hundred Miles', 'A Little Bitty Tear', 'My Grandfather's Clock', 'Mary Anne', 'Omoide No Nagisa', 'Autumn', 'With A Hmm Hmm On My Knee', 'Maria Elena', 'Let Me Take You There', 'A Thing of Beauty', 'San Francisco', 'Alentejo', 'Poem', 'Maggie's Samba', 'Chameleon' (Hank Marvin, solo) & 'finally 'Classical Gas' (1979) - that's 24 'Acoustic' led or flavoured vocal & instrumental tracks (have I missed out any ?)

EMI could consider such a compilation CD which would showcase the more reflective side of The Shadows.

what do Shadows folk think ?

Well, let's see...

Singles (omitting non-Shadows and LP-derived tracks):

1967 - Maroc 7 / Bombay Duck / Tomorrow's Cancelled / Somewhere [all with mono and stereo versions] eight tracks
1968 - Dear Old Mrs Bell / Trying to Forget... / Running Out of World [all with mono and stereo versions] six tracks
1969 - Slaughter On 10th Avenue [stereo only] one track
1975 - Run Billy Run [stereo only] one track
1976 - It'll Be Me, Babe [stereo only] one track
1978 - Sweet Saturday Night [stereo only] one track
1980 - Riders In The Sky [remix] / Rusk [stereo only] two tracks .

Albums:

1967 - "Jigsaw" (14 tracks, mono and stereo) 28 tracks
1967 - "From Hank, Bruce, Brian and John" (14 tracks, mono and stereo) 28 tracks
1968 - "Established 1958" (7 tracks, mono and stereo) 14 tracks
1970 - "Shades Of Rock" (12 tracks, stereo only) 12 tracks
1973 - "Rockin' With Curly Leads" (12 tracks, stereo only) 12 tracks
1975 - "Specs Appeal" (12 tracks, stereo only) 12 tracks
1975 - "Live At The Paris Olympia" (14 tracks, stereo only) 14 tracks
1977 - "Tasty" (11 tracks, stereo only) 11 tracks
1979 - "String Of Hits" (12 tracks, stereo only) 12 tracks
1980 - "Another String..." (one new track, stereo only) 1 track

EPs:

1967: "The Shadows On Stage And Screen" [4 tracks, mono and stereo] 8 tracks

There were also a number of miscellaneous EMI (Parlophone?) tracks issued on CD (mainly post-1990).

The list above comes to 172, which is do-able on six CDs. I'd have thought it would sell to fans as easily as the "Early years" set did.

No need to include solo members' tracks: those could be compiled into another set.

Hi, Uli,

I was thinking of that as a post-1990 "miscellaneous" track.

It was never released in the UK until the "Everything of Value" CD!

Same as the instrumental version of No No Nina, or The Air That I Breathe, etc.

If those are included, the score probably goes up to 180 or so - just right for a six-disc set.

I've got most (if not all) of those tracks already but i wouldn't mind a CD copy of a mono 'Hank Marvin' album and 'From Hank, Bruce.....' also in mono (i only have a stereo CDs of both albums). I've also not got the post 1967 singles in mono either.
Also, was Shades of rock ever released in mono? I would buy that too, for completist sake.

No 'Shades of Rock' dates from 1970 and was a stereo only British release as EMI had 'phased out' doing new mono versions in the UK by the end of 1969, tho' earlier releases of mono/stereo versions of older albums could still be found for a time, the 'Hank Marvin' 1969 solo set was the last 'new release' mono version/stereo version (SX/SCX 6532) Columbia Shads related album

Whether anything was later released in a mono format overseas (as DID happen with The Beatles !) is open to question of course...

The earlier Shadows albums are all worth picking up on vinyl in mono as the mono sound does have a more direct feel to it...and very early copies of 'Shadow Music' in mono have the rarer version of 'Benno San' (plus they are 'pre-digital remastering' which can surprisingly alter the sound quite a bit - listen to any older original singles by Shadows/Beatles/ Hollies etc compared to either LP versions or later CD issues...)

old mono singles by all those bands 'blow your speakers apart'...!!(especially The Shads Columbia singles)

EMI (UK) released a 28 track mono/stereo CD version of 'From Hank Bruce Brian & John' (7243 4 99767 2 6) in 1999.

'I Can't Forget' was released overseas, it was on an EP I believe plus can be found in stereo on the German Columbia 'Best of The Shadows' double LP I got back in 1973...!

'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' was a later released sixties instrumental track too, I think the criteria is IF it were recorded or at least first released between 1967 and 1980 ('Somewhere' first came out in 1967 as a 'B' side, so could be included but I believe was in fact recorded pre 1967)

'Trying To Forget The One You Love' original mono single version differs notably to the more common stereo mix

'Everything of Value' included the more common stereo version that was on the budget Regal Starline album 'Something Else', but that mono alternate version can be found as the final 'Track 26' - along with true stereo 'F.B.I.' (Track 9) and the rare acoustic mono 'Genie With The Light Brown Lamp' (Track 16) on the French Magic Records CD;
'The Final 60's' (Magic 3930172) released in 2002.

and Don't forget those four Japanese tracks from 'The Shadows in Japan' EP in 1967 -
'Omoide No Nagisa, 'Gin Iro No Michi', 'Kimi To Itsumademo' and, for some strange reason 'Londonderry Air' (hardly Japanese !) all of which exist in stereo and mono format.

To be honest the acoustic version of 'Genie' is more of a demo and is very rough (the sound suggests it's been dubbed for disc rather than a master tape) and seems to be have been recorded so they could work out the arrangement, but is interesting to hear.
I'd love to hear all the unreleased alternate takes and false starts complete with studio banter but that's unlikely to happen anytime soon (if ever!) :D

If The Beatles can find it in them, then Why can't The Shadows ?http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2523070/The-Beatles-record-company-forced-release-bootleg-versions-59-songs.html

I take Fenderman's point re the Acoustic version of 'Genie' - but it HAS been released in other countries thus OUGHT to be available on a UK Shadows release too for British fans to easily obtain - yes ?

A 24 track (or so) Acoustic set of instrumentals & vocals would be an interesting collection - like 'The Shadows Vocals' album/CD was some years back - and would therefore be the perfect home for a UK release of the Acoustic version of 'Genie' - they also once played an Acoustic version of 'Atlantis' on a 1965 Cliff TV Spectacular which was recorded and survives in decent sound with just TV audience applause at the start & conclusion (similar to the crowd they dubbed onto the edited version for single release of 'Argentina')

Another 'Electric Shadows' more 'punchier' side of The Shadows 2 CD Set might be:

Disc One:
1.F.B.I. (Stereo)
2.Shadoogie
3.Gonzales
4.The Boys (Stereo)
5.South of The Border
6.Rank A Chank
7.Blue Shadows
8.Rhythm & Greens
9.Chatanooga Choo Choo
10.Main Theme
11.The Drum Number
12.The Lost City
13.Breakthru
14.Alice in Sunderland
15. The Warlord
16.Stingray
17.Late Night Set
18.Benno San
19.March To Drina
20.Thunderbirds Theme
21.Scotch On The Socks (Mono version - minus all the 'Laughter' !!)
22.Jigsaw
23.Tennesse Waltz
24.Semi Detached Suburban Mr. James

CD Two:
1.Maroc 7
2.Bombay Duck
3.The Flyder And The Spy
4.Snap, Crackle & Hows Your Dad
5.Naughty Nippon Nights
6.The Tokaido Line
7.Last Train To Clarksville
8.Voyage To The Bottom Of The Bath
9.The Magical Mrs. Clamps
10.Paperback Writer
11.River Deep Mountain High
12.Johnny B.Goode
13.Memphis
14.Jungle Jam
15.Humbucker
16.Rockin With Curly Leads
17.Honorable Puff Puff
18.Spider Juice
19.Another Night
20.Superstar
21.Sweet Saturday Night
22.Rusk
23.Jumpin Jack Input
24.Honky Tonk Women

This 2CD set of their EMI tracks would highlight the grittier more powerful side of The Shadows which alot of guitar lovers outside the group's fanbase don't ever seem to acknowledge !
