In the 'fast free form' solo in the middle it's possible to make out a guitar note/sound in the background whining and dropping in pitch - presumably Hank, and sounding like the whammy bar being depressed. But at the same time he is playing 'un-bent' notes on top of it - how is that possible - or is not Hank making the sound?

Hi Mike,

The sound is all Hank - no added extras.

It has to be played in the correct position to sound right starting with double stop 12th fret 3rd string and 10th fret 2nd string. What you're hearing is a combination of the played notes and the 'clanging' of an open B string.

Difficult to describe - easier to demonstrate. Pop round!

Brilliant as these are I can't hear what I'm talking about - the clanging open strings don't drop in pitch like on the record - must be my ears I suppose. Thanks for the responses.

Hi Mike, here's what I did some years back as I was asked to do at the time.
Before anyone starts bleating or generally trying to take a pop at me, it's the Shads that you hear, not me, the reason for this being that it was instruction in how to do it, not how to get 'that sound' . Had I played it then was always some 'clever' person telling me I was playing it wrong.

It used to be on Youtube but I had it took off because of smartarses moaning.

The version I currently play bears little resemblance to this now.......... too boring.
