Editing on TOTP 1979

Needless to say, I stayed up and watched the midnight showing of last night's TOTP 1979 as well as the 7.30. I was surprised to see just how many acts they cut out of the earlier showing but reinstated in the later one: LEO SAYER, MANKIND, THE DOLL, HOT CHOCOLATE, LEGS AND CO. A full ten minutes was cut for reasons that are not entirely clear to me. I am guessing that it is probably due to the strict schedule earlier in the evening - i.e. they only have a 30 minute slot to fill. This is a shame as the edited version of the programme does therefore give a very inaccurate or incomplete view of what was in the charts in that particular week. Obviously I was very pleased that they left the Shadows in the shortened version, but will we be so lucky next time...? Personally, I quite enjoyed seeing Mankind doing their disco version of the Doctor Who theme; likewise The Doll (a punky band with a girl on guitar) and the epic video for the Hot Chocolate song. For some reason I enjoyed watching Legs and Co too....

;)

By the way, the editing was pretty smooth and the shortened version of the programme looked OK.

Sadly I have it on good authority that the edition from 25 Jan will NOT be repeated at present as DLT is presenting. A shame, as the Shads were on it again... :(

25/01/1979
Image for 25/01/1979Not currently available on BBC iPlayer
Duration: 35 minutes

Weekly pop chart programme presented by Mike Read, including performances by Nazareth, the Three Degrees, UFO, the Members, Sally Oldfield, Two Man Sound, Generation X and the Pointer Sisters, with a dance sequence by Legs & Co.

Apparently not. Sorry.

I also gather that they edited out Olivia's appearance from last night's show (7.30pm), but I assume it was back in for the slightly longer midnight showing! I just wish they would find a way of showing the WHOLE programme at 7.30, as some people will not be aware of the later repeat and may not want to stay up if they are.

:(

Apparently, this is the show we SHOULD have been seeing next week. Chart placings in brackets. A shame, as it would have been a good 'un... :(

25-1-79: Presenter: Dave Lee Travis

(6) BLONDIE – Heart Of Glass (and charts)
(27) DR. FEELGOOD – Milk And Alcohol
(26) BARRY MANILOW – Could It Be Magic (video)
(21) THIRD WORLD – Cool Meditation (danced to by Legs & Co)
(12) BARRY WHITE – Just The Way You Are (video)
(28) THE DOLL – Desire Me
(25) LEIF GARRETT – I Was Made For Dancin’ (video)
(44) JUDAS PRIEST – Take On The World
(37) PHOEBE SNOW – Every Night
(9) THE SHADOWS – Don’t Cry For Me Argentina ®
(NEW) DONNY & MARIE OSMOND – On The Shelf
(1) IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS – Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick ®
(3) EARTH, WIND & FIRE – September (and credits)

I am assuming that the (R) after the Shads means this was a repeat of the previous appearance. My info comes from another message board. I believe it to be accurate.

According to the official chart register Ian Dury wasn't number one until the following week (http://www.officialcharts.com/archive-c ... 1979-01-20) and the Shadows were at number 23. They were at 9 the following week so their performance was probably repeated now that they were in the Top 10, so that listing you have might be a week out.

Although I've never seen TOTP on American TV, I found some clips on YouTube and maybe this is the Shads' performance you were referring to. I'm not sure. I found the intro a bit humorous because the host says something like, "See if you can spot some familiar fingers and familiar faces in this next number..." And, it's not really the traditional Shadows line-up. George Ford is on Bass, and Alan Hawkshaw is on keyboards. I'm delighted...I love those people...but I wouldn't refer to it as a familar line-up. :)

Or maybe this one:

Donna,

Yeah, these are the first and 2nd performances on Top of the Pops for '...Argentina'. I look forward to seeing the second performance again when they repeat this edition. :D
