American Hustle

Just returned from a cinema trip to see this. About halfway through there is a cracking guitar instrumental being playing in the background.

A bit of Googling reveals that it is called Stream of Stars, a Jeff Lynne composition. Would make a classy Shads style number.

The sound is certainly more than a little Hank-influenced...

You mean apart from outstanding performances by Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence, David?

Jeff Lynne writes some good instrumentals - "Theme for Something Really Important" for instance! :D

It's background music. That's it. Unremarkable.

Yes, it's a nice enough tune, but not remarkable enough to remember. It doesn't seem to have that hook that would make it a classic. The actual sounds & quality are top notch, & the guitar tone great, albeit a Jeff version of Hank. But I guess we all try to make our own versions of Hank, too. I am a sincere Jeff Lynne fan, & delight in his phenomenal ELO work. Now that is Classic !

I thought the whole thing tedious, George. We fell asleep at one stage...

I went to an afternoon showing of 'Lincoln' last year and the woman next to me (no, not my wife or anyone else of my acquiatance) fell asleep. Now I know it's a very long film but this was after the opening credits! She woke up and saw the last hour or so...
To be honest, I thought American Hustle was somewhat over-rated and the twist was obvious. It's not 'The Sting' by any means, but I did think it was saved by some superb performances from the stars. You might enjoy 'Inside Llewyn Davis' more, David.

However - to get back to the topic - I still think Stream od stars is a nice hommage to (or pastiche of) the Shadows style. If I could write 'background music' that's 'unremarkable' like that, I'd be quite happy... 8-)
