Hi guys ,, ive been looking on YT at some Johnny Guitar tunes and im wondering if the Shadows actually ever recorded this one .

There seems to be some conflicting points on YT , some say yes ,, some say no.

If they did record this tune , which album is it on ..

Yes , I know the Spotnicks recorded it.

If you mean this one, I was told that the man behind this tune was Hans Hollestelle. He is a friend of me on facebook and
confirmed this !

The Shadows never recorded Johnny Guitar, the version which can be found on the net as being played by the Shadows comes from this record :





It's played by Hans Hollestelle (uncredited), a Dutch guitarist.

My father has a copy of this album on vinyl as well. Hans Hollestelle also used to be the lead guitarist of the Dutch group The Torero's. They made several singles in the 1960's, but only seven instrumentals on four singles. Despite just seven, they are great recordings.

There's an indirect connection between the Drifters/Shads and Johnny Guitar via the 1954 rendition by Norrie Paramor and his Orchestra, which features a brief Spanish guitar solo by Ernie Shear, he, of course, the celebrated Move It lead guitarist some four years later...

Which doesnt mention The Shadows at all. And several of the tracks ARE by other guitarists / bands.
Pity that Hans Hollestelle wasnt creditted though.

I still play a set of what could be loosely called "Shadows Style" instrumentals, one of which is Johnny Guitar. This thread has been a revelation to me as I have been under a misapprehension for years that the Shads covered this one. I also thought that the 1954 copyright made it the oldest (apart from really old classical or traditional tunes). Thanks everyone - I stand corrected!

By way of some mitigating revenge I would like to pose the following "Brain of Britain" style question.

Which tune, played and recorded by at Shads, carries the earliest copyright?

Thanks Didier. I think I am looking for the song with the earliest composition date!
Acoording to Wikipaedia, "My Grandfather's Clock" was a song written in 1876 by Henry Clay Work. Would this be the one I am looking for?
