London Palladium, May 1979

Just had a thought, I do from time to time...

In May 1979 the Shads did a short season at the London Palladium. This was at about the time they were in the charts with Cavatina. I was wondering; was there a special concert programme produced for this? If so, I've never seen it...

That, I don't know. What I do know, is that The Shadows filled in for Cliff Richard on Sunday, May 20th, 1979, because he doesn't (or didn't?) work on Sundays. It was during this concert, that The Shadows played "Theme From The Deer Hunter (Cavatina)" live for the very first time.

I was at that concert on the Sunday.
If I remember correctly, there was very little advertising - I saw just a small classified ad in the London Evening Standard.

It was, indeed, just a one-nighter in the middle of Cliff's two-week season at the Palladium. No programme, obviously.

Hank; "Would you like to hear our new record?"
Audience Yes!
Hank (to unseen stagehand): "Can you put the new record on, please..."

It was also the first time that they did the 'Move it intro gag - "Well he's been here all week..."

Thanks. Sorry, I was under the impression that they were there for a week or so. Obviously I was wrong. Interesting. At a friend's house at the moment, having a few drinks and listening to 'Change of Address' on CD. Got some really amazing stuff to play later (Shads bootlegs etc...) A good night lies ahead. I shall sign off whilst I can still see straight...

:o :o :D

I've just found my set list for the Palladium gig, I'd forgotten all about this one.
Cavatina is not on the list but I do remember it being played live for the first time so I suppose it must have been on this show.
