I'd like to ask those of you who have made home videos of themselves playing how they do it.

Do you record live playing and live BT and if so, how do you get good sound quality on a regular digital camera's relatively poor mic . . .

or

Do you mime to a previously recorded sound file and then how do you synchronize the video and audio into a seamless whole . . .

What about more complex videos (such as those produced by Ecca, Vic Jolley and many others) incorporating inserted pictures or film clips . . .

I have Windows Movie Maker, is that sufficient or do I need a better program?

Any tips will be appreciated!

Windows Moviemaker is fine for starters.
It depends what sort of video you want to do.
If all that you want to do is play and record then start the camera recording, start the backing track and then play what you want to, posing accordingly.
The sound you get will depend on the quality of the microphone in the camera, its placement and the volume that you're playing at, etc.
This is bottom line , simplest.
Put that recording into Moviemaker and edit the start and the ending so as to clean it up.
You could next time, play and record your masterpiece independently, complete, prior to the video and then do the same as before but use the audio track you recorded independently so that you're then miming. This is the best audio quality because you wouldn't be dependent on the camera microphone or placement etc, you would use a better microphone. You would then sync the mimed track to the recorded track within Moviemaker.

The best person to ever grace this site with video knowledge and technique is Gill Gatland. However like most of the old time members she got fed up with dishing tuition out and left it to the ubiquitous newcomers who thought they could do it better.
