Couple of interesting conversations during a solo gig last night.

Punter No 1 "Can you play Peace Pipe?"
Me "That's the tune I've just finished playing".


Punter No 2 "The Shadows are my all time favourites, can you play Theme For Young Lovers for me?"
Me "I played that two tunes ago".

Is it that people just don't listen or are they trying to show off their knowledge of songs without really knowing what they sound like?

Funny, someone else said that!!!! I'll have to look at my score!

Many years ago, Chris and I were in The Shadowcasters and we were signed up to Beverley Artist(e)s. Bill Reeve had done a really impressive Double Crown size poster billing us as "The North East's Premier Rock and Roll Tribute Act" The poster was prominently displayed in the foyer of a Middlesbrough Working(?????) Men's club. Couldn't miss it as you walked through the door. It was one of those gigs where......well you know something's not right as soon as you walk into a room? It was one of those........

Concert Secretary: "Right! are you lot ready?"
Us: "Yes, its 8:25 and you asked us to be ready for 8:30. We're ready.
C.S. "Right! Get on then! And I'll just tell you now-"THEY DON'T LIKE ROCK & ROLL!!"

And, do you know what ? They didn't! Talk about dying for the cause. The poster might just as well have said "The North East's least known silent band, featuring
a tone-deaf dwarf whistling tunelessly."

That must have been a challenging gig!
I'd have done a fifteen minute drum solo just to piss them off!

Don't worry if they can't remember or don't know the names of the Shads or other tunes!

We do at least two or three instrumentals per set at our regular gig, and did so last Saturday night, I played the lead bits, and we did Apache, Dance On, Round & Round, Shazam, TFYL, Shadoogie, Flingel Bunt, FBI, MOM.(didn't do Walk Don't Run or Tequila the other evening though) ..if they clap afterwards that's good! And they often do, as I think many folks still enjoy a proper tune played on a clean sounding electric guitar, rather than just fuzz toned indulgent leads..

Even the band members ' lady wives and partners forget the names of tunes and they usually come along to most gigs..I forget some titles myself but as long as I play the right tune it's OK!

This reminds of a time many years ago when our band played at a working men's club, which we often did. I played lead guitar and between sets the concert secretary said to me (I wish I could do his northern accent in print) "that were great! When you play that guitar you sound just like that Hank Williams"!

Ah yes, the WMC Entertainment Sec!

Back in the sixties, unloading the group van. The Entertainment Sec looks at all our amps then points at my AC 30 and says, "You'll only need one of them, lads, it's a small club."

And when I was with a dinner-dance band, years later, playing at a club function: "And you will end by playing the Polish national anthem, won't you?"
