I see Radio 2 are broadcasting Bert Weedon: the Teacher of Rock and Roll on Monday at 10:00 p.m. It's presented by Richard Hawley who did the Shads' bio a few months back.

Martin.

Excellent programme - Bert sounded like a very nice man, not at all put out by the fact that the Shadows had a massive hit with Apache and his own version was overshadowed. I was interested that Bruce Welch mentioned a song he and Hank wrote for Bert called "Mister Guitar" which I've never heard of before. Richard Hawley's programmes are very good - I enjoyed his rockabilly series and his Shads tribute. Richard's "Coles Corner" album, by the way, which I only recently discovered, is wonderful.

In Bert's "This is Your Life" a few years back, Hank mentioned that he and Bruce had written Mr Guitar for Bert in 1961 and asked when they were going to get paid!

I've been a fan of Bert's since 'Stranger Than Fiction' in the mid '50's, so I'm biased!

Listening to his playing over the years, he was a superb player- and if anyone thinks he couldn't play exciting guitar instrumental music they should listen to the fearsome Ghost Train- would have been interesting if the Shads had covered that one- the tune is different, but it always sounds to me like the next step from FBI and Man of Mystery

BTW- The Ventures covered Bert's 'Ginchy'- which was good, but not as good as Bert's original.

A lot of his stuff is very tricky to play too...many Shads tunes are straightforward to play by comparison!

He is much missed!

I saw Bert play at the Dorchester cinema in Hull in the 70's as part of Marty Wilde's show. He walked on stage carrying a Yamaha amp, plugged his guitar in and started playing - simple as that - magic.
