ShadowsMusic CD

On Gretsch Pages the members in the past have issued some CDs of their performances ranging from excellent to not so excellent but they are very enjoyable. Not sure if anything like that has happened on this site. If people were willing to contribute tracks they could be perhaps be compiled and given away and takers could perhaps make a contribution to the Jet Harris fund.

I would be hopeless at trying to organise this. Do members think this a possibility and is there anyone with the organisational skills who could pull it together

That is potentially a very good idea, Bill. The issue would be accumulating the funds to press the CD. That would have to be done on a donation basis.

Just about everyone can make their own recording at no cost. I would be happy to take on the task of making the project happen. I would put a deadline in place for members to submit their tracks or, depending on the popularity of the project, establish a "first come, first served" basis. I think it goes without saying that each person could only have one track published. I would be happy to design the CD cover. I'm sure the other committee members of the Jet Harris Memorial Fund would support this. I'll raise the topic and see what the response is.

The old Ventures newsgroup did more than one CD along those lines.

Great idea!

How will copyrights (Individual numbers and the BTs used) be handled? Not being negative but, since this will be a commercial venture, it's important to know.

Could the album be produced as a download rather than a CD a bit like itunes. I think the copyright issues would be overcome as they would not be original artist and not exact copies some may be original numbers. Many radio stations get over the royalties by playing slightly different versions. The items would not necessarily be sold but money paid into a pot which would be given to charity. Perhaps someone on the site knows a lawyer.
Just some ideas
It seems doable as there are so many great players, bands and clubs on this site . Perhaps recordings could be done at club meets.
A decision as to the type of music acceptable would be needed perhaps guitar music plus any Cliff numbers

Has anyone on here produced their own CD for sale, I know Stratgirl Zoe has a DVD out, maybe some advice from anyone who has already done this before would help.
Would there be any royalties if the music is our own (no backing tracks).
I have visited a few good clubs capable of producing a good live sound, Silver shadows and Breakthru' at Surrey Shadows club and Geoffs band from South Coast Shadows. Why not simply record a few tracks from these and burn the best to disc?

The only way to avoid the copyright issue is to record completely original material. Even if you record everything without using commercial backing tracks, there is still copyright in the piece of music itself and the composer, publisher or other rights holder will require to give permission, or to expect payment. Given that it would be a small scale charity issue with a limited run, you *might* get permission, but you cannot assume so.

Royalties would definitely be payable, via MCPS, to the copyright holders of the tunes included.

Then we will have to write our own in "shadows" style

Steve's idea of using only original tunes in Shadows style is definitely the way to go - especially if you want non-contributors to buy it. (Who needs yet another album of Shads covers?!!!)
