WARNING! ALL MEMBERS PLEASE READ...

Last night I received an email from a friend on ShadowMusic with an attached link to Google Docs.
I was suspicious so emailed him to check it was genuine. He replied that it WAS and to check it...
I did, but it wouldn't work... Turns out that it was NOT GENUINE and this morning, all my Contacts have gone.
Even more worrying was that he did not send the reply urging me to check it
BE WARNED... I HAVE NOT SENT ANY EMAILS WITH LINKS OR ATTACHMENTS. IF YOU GET SUCH A MAIL, IT IS NOT FROM ME... DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT OR LINK. JUST BIN IT!
IT IS LIKELY THAT ALL MY CONTACTS WILL RECEIVE IT...

I got one yesterday (also from a Peter Alden) and instinctively deleted it . . .

Just a thought, but the last time I looked at the membership lists, there are many registered names/nicknames etc
who have never logged on since joining or had a lengthy absence that suggests they are inactive or no longer interested.
Yes I know some may look in as guests for reasons of privacy etc, that's their choice
Some people might have forgotten that they had registered!!!
It might be an appropriate time for Site Administrators to review, mainly to reflect on true membership numbers at the
current time, and perhaps give lapsed members the opportunity to have their details removed if they so wish.

I also got one from Peter Alden, which was deleted right away. As you point out, it is alarming that you got a response from where the email originated.

That sounds like a very sensible idea, Mike, and any business maintaining customer lists does well to keep tabs in that way. The problem here, though, is that members join once: there is no need to renew. If a member stops taking an active part we have no means of knowing which of all sorts of reasons might apply. Fortunately we don't need to know; I shudder to think how big the task of making individual approaches would be. The site has no staff to take on work like this. We have Bob, our Administrator, who from day one has given freely of his own time and money to build and maintain the site from an IT point of view: those who kindly use the Donate button are helping to defray his expenses. And there are three Moderators who, again, keep an eye on the site in their own time just to make sure we stay legal and decent. We also check applications for membership, which come in every day even now. If anyone would like to volunteer to help with a bit of housekeeping, please let us know. There may be things we could do that would be beneficial.
Best wishes - Iain

I too got one from PA. Suspicions aroused by a black To: field, and when a mouseover (without clicking) revealed a very odd web address.
I emailed Peter and he confirmed that he had *not* sent out any such email.
